My 2009 Z4 retractable hardtop started pausing halfway down and then stopped. Letting off the button for a few seconds and pressing it again would complete the journey to the down position. Same thing going up; pause halfway up, let off the button for a few seconds and then press again and it would return to the closed position.

I was worried that it might fail with the top down in a rainstorm, so I took it to my mechanic. He’s had it for six months and has replaced both struts, all switches, and trouble shot shorts in the wiring. Now it doesn’t work at all.

The car is otherwise in great shape inside and out, but only worth about $3,500 at best. Does anyone have advice on what to try? We’re only wanting to keep it to drive as a convertible, but that doesn’t seem to be an option.

Very irritating, isn't it? What means all switches, what means shorts in wiring, where exactly? Nevertheless, he didn't hit the point.
Should be a bit more exact.

Well, the description indicates a broken wire in the roof shell, left or right.
Another starter:

You should have charged him a rental fee!
