Key fob dead? VARTA battery!

Post by flybobbie » Sat Dec 03, 2022 1:32 pm

Other thread trying find problem with no ign. with fob in.

So messed around today.
Finally did the battery capacity check................39%
Was day before fail 99%
So decided to pull the battery and charge it.

What do i find, the battery clamp nuts are fully tight, but clamps pulled straight off.
The battery terminals are too small for the clamps.

I assume the cold snap the terminals have shrunk slightly, clamps come very lose.

So be careful with VARTA E39 silver dynamic batteries.

I will have to shim the clamps with some old feeler gauges or see if maintenance here has some shim steel.
Keeping fingers crossed this is causing the problems, certainly not helping.

Well charged battery and tried that.
No joy.
Check all the negative connections next.
Try disconnecting the IBS.
But i think i might change the Terminal 15 relay, might be that stopping from coming on.

Awaiting parts from BMW.
Key slot on order from Germany. Keep in mind different version appears to be used later models.

Meanwhile fitted battery and broke the negative terminal bolt off :(

It seems to be made from cheese.
What a stupid design.
Here we go again reinventing the wheel or kettle spout.

Instead of bolt pulling the clamp together to provide the clamping force, as in just about every other car i have bought, they try to turn the force through 90 degrees to pull the halves together.
So there is only so much force you can apply, till the thread shears.

I might try to drill through the side and fit my own bolt.
