Fuel prices in Supermarkets

Post by Nanu » Tue Nov 22, 2022 7:43 pm

Are we being ripped off by supermarkets?

Yesterday I filled up with regular petrol at 155.9p at a BP garage. A Shell garage 200 yards away was priced at 157.9p.

Asda was 160.9 and Morrisons was 162.9p. Sainsburys haven’t shown the prices on their forecourt displays for a month or so now but at the pumps it’s 163.9p.

Am I missing something but I used to think the supermarket fuel was always the cheap crap. Not anymore. Is this just a Northern thing or is it around the country?

Location is the biggest factor around here. A38 Garages are 169.9p. Supermarkets 162.9 and remote sites 159.9. So definitely profiteering going on, as the remote garages probably have the bigger overheads per ltr. :?

Supermarkets set their pricing policy within a certain radius, aiming to be the cheapest in that area. The Morrisons nearest to my home is one of the most expensive as its catchment area only has petrol stations on the M62/A63 dual carriageway.

Prices have certainly dropped this week

Supermarkets used to do a 10p/Ltr Discount after a big spend in store - that doesn’t seem to happen now.
( it would have to be 20p/Ltr now  )

Its the same here, I have an Sainsbury / Morrisons and Tesco close by, the cheapest is a small independent, normally 5ppl more than the supermarkets, now 3 or 4ppl cheaper.

I think the cause is that the supermarkets hedge the fuel so cant drop as quickly as local garages who pay by the tanker load

For about 6 months or so supermarkets around my way haven't been any cheaper than Shell/Esso, etc.

But that is for Regular E10 - my cars should both have 98 RON whenever possible. Tesco Momentum is only 7p a litre dearer than Regular, but at Shell/Esso etc. their Premium fuel is usually at least 15 a litre dearer so I'm still going to Tesco!

Supermarkets will be doing a balancing ack with certain products, in the past they would be making enough profit from selling food to discount the cost of fuel it looks like that could be either balancing out or fuel is being used to discount the cost of food, it may not seam like it at the check out though as everything is going up.

Was thinking about this earlier...

My 'ball and chain' filled up at Morrisons in Peterborough today. Unleaded 155.9p. We live about 15 miles north of P'borough and our local Sainsbury's is 166.9p for unleaded. Local Morrisons is 165.9p.

That's 50p a gallon cheaper just down the road!! :o
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

The app also has a go to the station button that then opens up a map and gives directions

I use that app as well, very useful to know not to waste time going to Tesco for 99 if the Shell is actually cheaper as it is now.

"Platts is a price benchmark service for the oil industry. Up until now, supermarkets were cheaper than most independent retailers because they would buy more fuel, which often meant they could react quickly when wholesale prices changed. According to Mr Owens, a changing price hike and current rationing could be contributing factors to the comparison in prices."
