Frozen out!

Post by McHaggis69 » Mon Nov 21, 2022 1:27 pm

So, we’ve moved house.

Previously had a secure underground parking space so cold weather was never an issue.
The Z4 is now parked on the drive and twice in the last week I’ve been shut out the car due to the windows being unable to lower to allow the doors to open - frozen shut.

I’m hoping there is a simple ‘fix’ for this or do I really have to get some warm water on the drivers side window every morning of a cold Scottish winter? 🥶

You could try lubricating the rubbers with silicone or something similar, I’m not sure if Vaseline would work or not.

How about a half cover from customs covers? Would only take an extra 2 mins to cover each evening after use and take it straight off in morning and put in the boot. Not sure if these would prevent the frost though.

A very light smear of the glass edges with washing up liquid works

Do you put it on the glass? Or the surrounding areas?

On the rubber seals
I’ve tried it without much success tbh. Hence comment on washing up liquid

On the rubber seals. I also had the problem of it freezing the mechanisms.. hot water is always the last resort. Or a cover!

I wouldn’t recommend Vaseline, or any other petroleum jelly product, as it will destroy some types of seals.

Gummy Pflege is what I’ve used on the Z4MC since 2010

Exactly.
Never use solvent-based lubricants on rubber, they destroy it. Washing up liquid isn't a good idea, either, as it generally includes petrol-based chemicals (solvents).
Silicone-based all the way.

One other solution is to move somewhere warmer!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Or move to the Westcountry, don’t get much frost in the Torbay area. :poke:
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

Happens to my Z regularly in winter here in Scotland. When cold weather forecast I use a car cover. Sometime windows/door still freeze.

I use an old credit card or similar pushed between rubber seal and glass and work it round window. Generally works. Have never been tempted to use hot or warm water!
