Fix it or break it

Post by Nash3vans » Thu Nov 10, 2022 8:59 pm

Your opinions please, bought this car recently, 2008. 89.thou miles, with the intention of getting it back on the road, bought it as cat s damaged. doesn’t owe me much so do I repair it or break it for parts. Problem is no history with it which will put off a potential buyer if I repair it. Seems a shame tho to take an si off the road for good. Your thought welcome.

I’m for break.

After that Cat S stamp, it’ll never be worth the same as a non categorised car.

Not that you need to put that much work in to sort it, but as always these cars are getting worth more in parts. Xenons, nav and the seats alone will probably give you a tidy profit.

I’ve noticed a few si cars for sale that are real nice not selling. That’s wot is pushing me towards breaking it.

I suppose it all depends on what you paid for it and how much you would expect to get back after stripping it.

That damage looks a bit too serious to make repairing a viable option cost-wise when you factor in the impact of a Cat S marker on its value.

Sadly I think it would work better as a breaker, but good luck whatever you decide.

I think it’s going for parts then. Is it just a matter of looking up old ads to see wot things sell for then adjust prices ?

What did you pay for it?
What would it cost to sort out?
How much fun could you have in it for say 3 years?
Then break it because of the CAT maker it has against it
Recover the above costs after breaking it.

As nice as the car would look once completed, I'd have to agree with everyone here, any Cat car is going to worth less than the equivalent non damaged car. The 2nd hand car market has stagnated in most cases and regressed for some including our Z4's. Unless you plan to keep the car longer term for the next 20 year's I'd say break it.

I have plenty fun in my merlot zed. gonna think on it a few days. As people have said probs worth a lot more in bits than profit I would get if I wanted to fix and sell. but the idea of a 3.0 si engine in an e30 sleeper just sprung into my head

That sounds like fun!

2 or 3 years ago a forum member bought a crash-damaged Sport Coupe as he needed a new engine for his 130i track car then broke the rest. Which was handy as he was less than a mile from me and I got a set of 224 wheels for my MC. :D

Sad indeed to see it go for good

But I'd be interested in the seats, dash and centre console :)
