Auto Dim Mirrors

Post by AndyS » Mon Nov 07, 2022 1:40 pm

Hello all.
Couple of questions about the auto dim/dip mirrors if I may.
The two wing mirrors dim down perfectly but nothing happens on the internal rear view mirror.
I'm assuming fuses must be ok as the sensors for all three mirrors are in the internal mirror housing I believe and the fact the wing mirrors are functioning would lead me to assume the sensors have power, hence fuses are ok. Please correct me if I'm wrong
For that reason, I'm guessing the internal mirror has failed in some way.
Can you replace just the glass or does the whole assembly need replacing and does anyone have part numbers for either the glass or the whole assembly, whichever it is I need?
The car is a 2016 20i M Sport if that makes a difference
Thanks in advance for your help.

So here is the version that'll be fitted to your Z4, part number 51 16 9 320 281, now the only used one I could find is this one (don't worry about it being listed as for a 1 series, it's the same part)...

Now this is the the older, superseded, version, part number 51 16 7 118 331,

Now the easiest way to do this will be to carefully open the case and unplug the mirror and swap it over, but if you were to swap the whole mirror then you're still going to need to open it up because you need to swap the small PCB over inside as this is the receiver for your remote key fob, so you won't be able to unlock the car without doing this.

Thank you so much for your reply and the effort you've gone to in locating suitable parts.
I know you said not to worry about the fact it's listed as from a 1 series but I'm more concerned about the difference in age.
The car the mirror is from is a 2007 1 series. Did they keep the same part all the way through to a 2016 Z4?

Having checked the parts catalogue, the mirror with part number 51 16 9 320 281 was fitted from July 2013, so I'm not sure how it's fitted to a 2007 vehicle unless it's been replaced at some point.

Thanks again for your reply.
So the part number I need to be looking for is 51 16 9 320 281 and as long as it's that, I'll be good to go.
You've been a massive help.
