Anyone have long term experience with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2’s in standard E89 18’’ configuration ?

I’m interested in wear rate, noise etc… basically, are they any good and do they get louder as they wear like some tires do?

No..but..had them fitted to SWMBO Mini Cooper SD F56 with 17" wheels..nice ride, quite quiet..ditto on our XC70 in 18" again nice ride and quiet..

Getting long in the tooth now..went with Contis on both those cars (and the E89)

In the case of summer tyres nope at the part of the market things haven't changed THAT MUCH...

But there are now better tyres, smoother, quieter better handling..the Conti Premium Contact 6 on my cars was a noticeable improvement..

Price can be a major variable..not sure how they price out..

Assy 6 and PS5s are both in the same space as the Conti Premium 6..

Again had Assy 5 and it was a very good tyre..the Assy 6 is even better..

Each turn of the design just keeps getting better..the R+Ts are just old designs..things have moved on..BUT NOT THAT MUCH!

I run them on 19s on my e89 buddy, tried Michelins ps4s and Goodyear Assy 5s on different wheels, the Dunlops were my favourite of the 3, much quieter than the others even though they were 19s compared to the smaller 18s on the other two.. comfortable ride, completely stable wet or dry and imho probably the best bang for buck tyre out there.. Id happily run them on any motor and I'd actively seek them out when buying new.. a really good tyre

Are you saying tech has moved on loads since the RT2’s… It might just be me, but I’m struggling to decipher the last line, what with it being in shouty capitals and being followed by the ‘ ’

No what I’m saying is that most products get better / more capable / achieve better trade offs against contradictory demands..

Each generation moves things on maybe a bit or maybe a lot..

In the case of summer tyres IMHO things have moved more slowly compared to how all season tyres have changed over the same period.

So the Dunlops are now 2 or 3 generations divorced from the latest offerings from manufacturers.

In that context it’s inevitable that there are ‘better’ tyres ..whether you need or want those extra capabilities is up to yiou obviously..

Sometimes older designs are deeply discounted which may weight the decision in their favour..

Personally I always buy the ‘best’ tyre I can for the task in the hand without regard to cost…I appreciate other people prefer a more balanced approach trading price against factors that they may not appreciate / happy to live without / will,never exploit ‘ are not relevant..

Quite so…we have the ‘benefit’ of unfortunately not being able to enjoy being parents…so the pets and toys get love and attention lavished on them….

For what it's worth, I put a full new set of 18inch Sport Maxx RT2's on my E85 a couple of years ago and found them more than adequate/good when your a looking for a value/capability compromise. Like B21 mentions, if you want a really upto date tyre, you pick a newer release from the manufacturer provided that pushing on a couple of hundred quid extra can be justified. (When you don't need to tell the wife)
I just put a set of 19inch Continental Conti Sport 7's on my E89 but wouldn't have had an issue fitting 19inch Sport Maxx RT2's.
