Nobody told me that

Had to replace the battery on the key fob. No probs but I thought I'd use the spare key to use up the battery before using the new battery on my normal key fob. Holly (my computer) forgot she was married to me and wouldn't talk to me and claimed that my profile wasn't me. I didn't realise that when you changed your key you lost all your settings. Not really sure the thinking behind this.....

The idea is that each key activates a different profile so if your other half drives the car it sets the car up for them.

All you need to do is assign your profile to the other key and both keys will have the same profile.

It's nothing new!

When I bought my first BMW (an E46) in 2005 the keys could be coded so the radio station and Climate Control settings could be specific to each key - and the seating/door mirror position if they had electric adjustment.
Coupes because stunning!

Odd that. I had my fob battery go after about 18 months after buying the car. It manifested itself once or twice at the place where I fill the tank by that "key missing" or something similar message on the screen. I put the fob up to the steering column and the car started. Went home and installed a new Duracell key battery. That did not fix the problem. Called my dealer who said come by for a "genuine BMW battery". I figured he was nuts, but did that anyway: Problem solved.

Does BMW really sabotage their fobs to ONLY work with a "genuine BMW battery"? :o Really hard to believe.

There is going to be many key battery level low warning before the key stops working.

On the battery side, I always use the battery from my local dealer's part department. It's only £4 and I would say buying any reputable and genuine battery from anywhere else won't be too much cheaper than this. Those cheap or fake battery doesn't work very well with BMW's key.

What does a 'fake battery' look like? A piece of round tinfoil ?

BMW don't make batteries. Battery manufacturers make batteries. One CRXXXX is the same as any other.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

If so, is it male or female Holly?

To be fair, not entirely sure as I know almost nothing inside a battery. One thing based on what my friend, who manufactures the battery, told me is that they sometimes come from the same factory as the genuine battery. It's just that they failed the QC process so that they will not be accepted by the brand.

Holly, played by Norman Lovett, had a head change for series III to Hattie Hayridge and then swapped back again in series VII :D I could never decide which one I preferred
