Changing Wheels Advice/Opinions Appreciated.

Post by Thunderous One » Mon Sep 19, 2022 7:43 pm

Hi fellow Zed owners, I would really appreciate any advice/opinion you have to offer on wheel replacements for my current BMW E86 Z4 Coupe.

I purchased the car with standard 18” MV2’s but sold those and replaced them with BMW 108’s.
The inner barrels require a refurb/powder coating, but I’m thinking of replacing them with either….
BMW 224’s (BMW Z4 M Wheels 18”)
Or
BMW 67M (BMW E46 M3 Wheels 18”)

So my questions are, will I….
Have issues with offset?
Can I use the tyres on my current wheels that are front J8 and rear J8.5 with, for example the BMW 67M’s that are front J8 but rear J9? (I believe the same can be said for the 224’s).

There’s a lovely set of powder coated black 224’s that I think are a forum members on eBay that I am watching, but they are up in Sutton Coldfield, so a bit of a trek, hence, I need to do my due diligence 1st.

Forgive my naivety, I’m normally a “keep it stock” person, but, I may keep the coupe a few years longer, thus, may personalise it with some subtle mods.
BMW E36 Compact “Dakar Yellow” (sold to make way for Z4 Coupe)
BMW E36 M3 Evo Vert (sold due to hit & run)
BMW E36 M3 Evo Vert (stolen written off)
BMW E36 M3 Evo Saloon (sold to buy Vert)
BMW E36 318is Coupe (sold to buy M3)

I think those 224s are wassups (might be wrong) and look super

I put 224s on my 3.0 03 ref and they have proper grown on me- I’ve never been a huge fan of 108s and love 107s on a pre facelift

The 224s are fine no offset issues although I did put spacers on the front and rear- I soon took them off the rear as they are already stepped out

Have a look at my for sale thread for pics
If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Take care with black wheels as they can get lost in the arches and/or show up how dirty your tyres are.

I’m definitely not a fan of 108s on the coupe, although they can look good on a roadster. 224s are lovely although many M owners seem to swap them out for CSLs which are also cool, if ubiquitous now.

What colour is your coupe?

Hi, my coupe is in black.
I purchased the 108’s initially as the MV2 is a very common wheel in the 3 series range, hence, the purchase of the 108’s.
I purchased my 108’s from a forum member a couple years back but they were resprayed black, not powder coated hence, they have peeled/flaked.

For the cost of having the inner barrels powder coated (£300+ at The Wheel Clinic, Northampton) I figured it may be more cost effective to just purchase replacements as it would not be too much of a stretch of a budget and I’d still have a spare set.

Can I just swap the current J8.5 rear tyres to J9 rear wheels?

cheers for your reply, they are “wassups” and I think he’s the sane guy that has been selling a few bits on the forum.
I texted him about his speaker set up not realising the ball ache of retro fitting a 10 speaker wiring loom to a coupe.
He’s a very nice honest guy, I’m hoping it’s the same guy.

The 224’s are a cracking wheel and do look the part.
The gloss black I feel would suit my black coupe.

Did your rear J8’s fit the rear J9’s of the 224’s?

I've seen a few non-Ms running 224 wheels and nobody has mentioned any rubbing issues.

But then the standard rear tyre sizes for MV2s/108s are 255/35 x 18 and 255/40 x 18 for 224s so only the profile is different. I have 255/45 x 18 rears on 224s on my MC and they have been fine.
Coupes because stunning!

Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

I guess it’s just a case now of getting some decently priced 224’s :D

Hey Thunderous one, yes they are my wheels on ebay and I've listed them on the forum here too. I think we exchanged numbers a while back when discussing speaker set up, if not happy to send, just let me know.

Here's a picture of the wheels on my black Z4M outside Everything M3s in Banbury, give you an idea of how they look on a black Z4M albeit a Roadster.

Yes I have 224s on my non MR they don't rub but do stick out on the back, the tread is inside the wheel arch at the top but the tyre isn't. I'm waiting for the old bill to pull me over. But yes they do look nice and every time I catch a glimpse of the car it takes my breath away. Is that a bit sad?
