Need some advice on pricing a damaged Z4

Post by Dr. Zed » Fri Sep 16, 2022 1:52 pm

Hi all,

Some of you might know at this stage that I've been looking for a wing for my Z4 for nearly a year now. Every colour under the sun are available on ebay bar Maldives Blue.

I'm currently looking at upgrading (downgrading?) to a 350Z. They've been my dream car for years now. I'm looking to see if the forum could help me establish a fair price point for my Z4 considering the damaged wing should I decide to sell it.

It's a 2004 2.5i SE with 107400 miles on it
I recently refreshed the front shocks, coils and drop links
I replaced both drive belts, water pump and thermostat and did a full coolant flush (and a second one when the expansion tank burst. I replaced this last weekend).
It's also has a brake flush when the brake pipes were rebuilt in the rear

I'll try get some pictures up of the damage but it's centralised on the front driver side wing, right beside the indicator.

Any one have any ideas what I could realistically get for my car?
Thought I'd ask the collective knowledge of the forum first. Thanks!
Maldives Blue 2.5i E85

Have you looked at the price of getting another wing and spraying it?

£2k I’d say. The market has crashed a fair bit but they are not in short supply either so you’ve got to make a damaged one cheap enough to shift in a market full of ones that are not damaged.

Which is why I wondered if it would be better to look at fitting a new wing. I think in this case it would become more than the sum of its parts.

Was quoted between 1.6-1.8k for a new wing, respray and blend. I'd love to get it fixed but I ain't paying that!

Flippin' 'eck!
I'm sure that can't be right? Can it?

How much of that was for the wing itself?
I've heard people getting front bumpers resprayed for around £300 I'm sure.
If you could pick up a replacement wing yourself they're not difficult to bolt on, so you'd only be paying for a paint job.

4 different places. cheapest was 1250 or something. Highest was 1880 or so. It's madness. Think they took advantage with the quote because of the car it is. Surprised there's no body shop people on this forum :P

I'll see if I can find a quote for one of them and check the break down.

So found a quote and the most expensive part was indeed the wing itself, but even at that, still looking at £800 which I find absolutely madness.

Is quite surprising that on this forum we have people who can swap all the suspension, move the roof motor, fix the steering, reprogramme every conceivable function, yet no-one can slap a bit of paint on a bit of metal.

That’s a crazy price, I’d have guessed £100 for a second hand wing and £300 max for decent paint job. I’m sure you could get it even cheaper.

I painted the bumper on this one (now sold) myself. The problem is not so much getting the colour right as the finish. It had quite a Matt appearance. Having since researched “how to fix peeling lacquer” it seems I probably didn’t put enough lacquer on and, after a few light passes should have applied a “flow” coat, i.e. a thick one.

Zedebee,

That looks pretty good mate!

Rockhopper,
Yup, I thought the same. I had it budgeted for about 500 quid. Anything over a grand is just madness though!
