Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.

You can use normal hydraulic jack fluid. I'd suggest topping it up as much as you can.

Looking at your level now I reckon another 15mil should fill it. Get yourself a small syringe and put some cloths down to save the carpet.
Hi enuff_zed, I have followed your lead, topped up the reservoir and removed the spring which was holding the lever in the manual position. had a guess at which button to press to operate the roof and hey presto it unlatched and continued to the open position. I thought wonderful. Then tried to close again and although the pump can be heard running the roof did not return to closed position. I believe that there is also a problem with the red pull cord as it looks as though the housing is broken and this cannot be locked in the manual position hence the spring. Although somewhat irritating I am learning all the time, back to my apprentice days.
If you have any ideas these will be appreciated once again.

I have followed the advice provided by enuff_zed, thank you very much. The position now is after lowering the parcel shelf I selected a roof button and by chance got the correct one as I do not have a manual. The roof unlatched from the front then continued to open fully. But when trying to close again the motor ran but the roof stayed in the open position. Noticed that the manual selection pull cable appears to be broken and will not lock in the manual position, hence the screw driver and the spring in the previous photo.
Any further help will be appreciated.

Hi well the manual release cable works by pushing in the bypass button on the pump.
In all honesty, with the pump accessible in the boot you don't even need it and could actually just remove it all. When you do you'll see the small brass button. It should protrude a couple of mm.
Next step, take another look at the fluid level in the reservoir. If it has dropped then you have a leak, probably where a pipe meets the operating ram. In that case there was enough fluid to move it one way, especially with gravity assisting it down.
Pray it's not that!
If the fluid level has remained the same then at least you don't have a leak. What you do probably have is a failing pump. They tend to fail in one direction first. If that is the case then I'm afraid it is time for a new pump. These aren't easy to find on their own and you may end up having to buy a complete new motor and pump assembly.

At this point, as you are in the North East, I would suggest you seek out Durham Dave who specialises in roof motors and as you can see by the name is probably your closest contact.
