Welcome!
Have you bought a whole car or just starting with a roof pump?

And what is going on with it? Looks like it's been relocated to the boot but still not working as, as far as I can work out, someone has jammed a screwdriver in to depress the bypass valve so you can move the roof manually?

I have taken the plunge and bought my first Z4, as a project car. First job is to fix the roof motor. As can be seen from photo 1, the pump/motor assembly is relocated into the boot, with a screwdriver holding the pump in the MANUAL position. This allows the roof to release from the front and to be open manually and closed again. It will not operate closed again with the switch, from the fully open position. Removing the screwdriver stops this from closing.
The fluid level to me looks low see the photo.
I can hear a motor running assume that it is the pump motor, I have checked the continuity and is OK.
Information on the correct fluid will be appreciated. I look forward to any replies.

If your motor is operating in that upright position then you have enough fluid in there to cover all the ports.
Rather than just 'hear a motor running' get someone to operate it while you hold the motor. You'll soon know if its running.
If it is, swap the electrical connections in case its running the wrong way round.
Then pull the screwdriver out, remove the plastic housing and see if the brass plunger will move out. It only moves a few mm. Could be seized in.
If you find the motor is running and the plunger is definitely pulled out, then you are looking at a new pump. That is the top square part in your picture.
If you say that removing the screwdriver stops it being able to move manually then it suggests the plunger is moving and you are then trying to force it against a hydraulic lock. Don't try to hard or you'll burst a pipe.
I'm leaning towards a new pump tbh.

Nice car but that roof motor has been bodged.
Should not be a spring in there in the first place.
You can use normal hydraulic jack fluid. I'd suggest topping it up as much as you can.
It will spill over when there is still about 5 mm gap in the reservoir. If you do this then there will be enough to sit the motor at an angle i the corner rather than keeping it upright where it is now.
Looking at your level now I reckon another 15mil should fill it. Get yourself a small syringe and put some cloths down to save the carpet.
