Oil temp on 2010 35i

Have owned the car for just a few weeks and have only just driven a decent distance 110km on mix of winding and straight roads 60-100km/h. Oil temp gauge did not go past 85degC.
Car was serviced prior to delivery and had new warrant of fitness etc.
I have searched on line but have struggled to find an answer. Runs well sounds awesome but I’m worried I’m missing something crucial here. I’m not heavy footed at all but did accelerate to 120 hard on a couple of occasions. I think the car hasn’t been driven hard for several months plus before I bought it. I would appreciate any advice.

I take it you think it’s running cool?
It does sound as if it could be running a little on the cool side but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, my 35is used to run similar temperatures when driving steady but in sport mode and pressing on I’d see temperatures in the 100 to 110 range, since having the water pump changed (known for failing around the 80k miles) and thermostat, I’ve noticed that it warms up quicker and runs slightly higher temperatures when in normal driving (I haven’t had the opportunity to stretch it’s legs), so yours could be ready for the water pump and thermostat changing, what’s the mileage and is there any record of it being changed?

Hi there, yes thought running cooler than it should do. I have attached a pic showing where the needle was for most of the journey last night. Water pump and thermostat changes….I’m not sure but the engine and the rest of the car is is beautiful condition so assume well looked after. Currently 91000km.

That does seem low, but as said better than overheating, just checked and a member on here’s water pump recently failed at 60k miles, so if you are concerned it may be wise to look at replacing the pump and thermostat.

Definitely not normal, should be over 90 within 15 minutes of normal driving, depending on ambient temperature, and keep going up to 110-120.

Went out this afternoon 17 deg and 50km limit….went up to 100 deg. Its not been warm here really until now and the car will not have been driven much over the winter. Ill keep an eye on it over the next week or two.

Did i read somewhere the larger engine cars have shutters on their radiators?

1. Your coolant thermostat is likely stuck open, common problem on the 35i
2. The previous owner may have fited an oil spool valve to lower oil temp in the car, I have one but it still runs at aroung 95 - 100 in normal driving - not as low as you have.
3. Guage or temp sender may be faulty. If you can find the temp sensor pull the cable off and touch it to earth, the guage should read right over to max temp, if it does change the sender, if it does not its likely the guage.
