Crunch time.. Corvette or Cayman.. help me decide

Post by mr.tourette » Fri Sep 02, 2022 4:22 pm

I an honestly torn here between 2 cars and I need to make a decision soon before I miss out, the cars are closely matched in buying price.. the vette is £1250 more.. no biggie

2006 Corvette C6 6.0 v8 convertible, 48k miles.. pro's... 400bhp v8 engine, roof down fun, cheap to tax as its a US import (250 p/a) looks stunning roof down, its a Corvette damnit, pretty reliable by all accounts, this one's been owned by a mechanic and has been meticulously maintained.. the sound.. that ass
Cons.. very low mpg might stop me using it as much, parts availability when needed, tricky to sell on if I dont bond with it.. its not as pretty roof up

2009 Cayman 2.9 manual 265bhp 30k miles

Pros.. its rather a nice looking motor, drives beautifully, decent enough mpg,, fully loaded with Chrono pack, sound pack, heated sports seats, parking sensors, nav, adjustable suspension etc, 2 owners always garaged.. its a mint, low milage example, 987.2 so no isues with IMS or RMS be easy to sell on if i got the hump with it not being a vert.

Cons... You never know with Porsche if a massive bill could be heading your way, its a tin top, doesnt sound a patch on the v8, slower (but no slouch at a 5.2 sec 0-60)

Vote away and please, any input as to which you chose and why could go a long way to helping me decide because Im stumped at the minute, Cayman seems the sensible choice and its a car I've always admired, my heart says the Corvette but I rarely make decisions like with my heart.. Thanks mates

Well, you asked. I wouldn't even consider the Corvette as I don't like them, to me big and ugly. Out of the 2, I would go for the Cayman, it looks amazing but it's not a convertible. So if it was my money it would have to be the Boxster, sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear. For me sports cars need to convertibles.

Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

Yes I voted Cayman as there isn't a Boxster choice. :D

Thanks Mikey, there's no opinions I don't want to hear mate, everything is going to be valid on here, even though the boxster is technically the same car as the Cayman to me they are fugly.. and I cant be having a fugly car on my drive :D but I get that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. for me the Corvette is just beautiful but I understand its not going to be everyones cup of tea.. thanks for the feedback pal

Cayman 100% but I might be a tad biased. I have a feeling you may tire of the Vette quickly and as you say moving it on might be difficult. The styling of the Vette looks dated. Obvious I know but I would have a specialist check the Cayman over. The routine servicing costs aren't that bad but if it throws you a curved ball then even the smallest of things can be expensive. Finally, if you do go down the Porsche route then make sure you have a trusted Indie in reasonable travelling distance. Good luck whichever way you jump

For me a Corvette is maybe in the category of cars that seem like a good idea and are incredible fun for the first month until the novelty wears off. Then it's just big, noisy, expensive and cheap feeling. Roof down V8 is a pretty compelling argument, but I don't think there's much else to back it up.

The Cayman is probably quicker than the quoted numbers, Porsches often are. The interior isn't the most exciting but it's still 100% better than the 'Vette, which looks to me like the inside of a 90's Daewoo. The appeal of the Cayman is of course the way it drives, and there's probably more to explore in that than there is in "V8 + roof down", if you love driving - so it will stay exciting for longer. And that straight six still sounds great when you go for it.

Cayman for me by a country mile, but like MikeyH I'd probably go Boxster so i could take the roof down. Except i wouldn't, because i dont think they're good value and I don't love how they look... so I'd buy a Z4. In Valencia Orange. Also there's zero chance my other half would allow me to buy a Corvette!

I am just not into American cars (including Teslas) so it's another vote for the Cayman!

Corvette looks extremely dated, but even if it didn't, Cayman every day of the week.
Get what you say with the earlier Boxsters looks, the 981/718's are stunning though. Loved mine.

Was me..great cars..drove a few when I worked in the States from 98 to 08…

As they say ‘the vette gets them wet’

Life’s too short…don’t follow the herd..

Having said that it’s a very different experience to an E89, and a fairly low power version..the Boxster through those eyes will always look like the sexier sister..

You really need to try one for at least a few hours both in traffic and out on some decent open aka fast roads..

If it’s a toy who cares about parts availability downtime..

For me in the UK the steering wheel on the wrong side would kill it..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is

I voted Cayman but as said above the Corvette looks dated. Think the v8 mustang looks so much better. Somebody parked a 58 reg blue Boxster roof up (!) in our street this morning and I found myself giving it a cheeky peek after walking past it, so definitely Porsche for me.

Corvette from those two every time.

Every man and his dog has a TT, Boxster, Z4 or Cayman parked on the drive. The Corvette is probably not as good a car all round. In a similar vain, an VW Passat is probably a better car all round than a Cayman or a Z4. But You don't buy one for fun.

Go for it, you can always be boring next time. 8) :driving:
