What convertible is as good looking as a z4

Post by mr.tourette » Wed Aug 31, 2022 5:47 pm

My current search for a new motor has me thinking.. maybe after a combined 6 years in an e85 and e89 has me doe eyed but I cant think of a single convertible (in the same price bracket.. say sub 20k) that looks as nice and performs as well... am I missing something here.. is there a car out there I've not considered? Im going to miss roof down fun if I get a Cayman but to me the older boxsters are ugly as sin.. the 718 is definitely a bit prettier.. maybe another z4 is the only answer to a nice looking vert? :?
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

Tricky isn't it? Apart from the usual suspects; SLK, MX5 or Z4 (Honda S2000 but they are now old), everything else I can think of are four seaters, so that much bigger and heavier. A 1 series vert or an Audrey A3 as the smallest I can think of, but neither are really 'sporty' or spring to mind as 'weekend fun cars'.
I'm thinking of selling my 440 vert but is a much bigger car and more than £20k. :(

F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said “in the same price bracket”. We all have different tastes, that’s what makes the world go round as they say. For me there isn’t another manufacturer that offers a car that has the same combination performance and looks that the z4 offers, “in the same price bracket”.

I did think as much.. bit depressing really innit.. a 35i is still in the mix potentially at this point but I think I do fancy a change and won't lose out much on a Cayman if it doesn't float my boat completely

This however does have a soft top, V8 and looks great

Audi TT maybe ?
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

I really like the MX5. 8) Not quite big enough for me to get comfy for a long drive in though. :(

Niggling thoughts about parts availability if needed.. I think of the vette as more classic car ownership experience which might require a bit more time looking after.. although by all accounts they can be very reliable from what I read.. Im just struggling to choose between the 2, both cars have their plus and minus points

I know what you mean. Been there many times, although for me it's always been about the running costs, and perceived depreciation. It's easy to talk yourself out of anything.
I sold my Alpina with the sole intention of getting an M6 vert. I ended up with a 440 vert because 'it made more sense'. Still want an M6 though! :o
