GPS Signal Lost

Post by dr_john » Sun Aug 28, 2022 10:11 am

My 3 year old G29 has recently started giving the verbal warning message 'GPS Signal Lost' on about 50% of the times that I start the car up.

I understand what this means but my sat nav still functions OK. I'm a bit concerned that it's an indication of something wrong which may turn out to need attention.

Anybody experienced this?

Are you out of warranty?

Quick call to the local dealer might give a solution.

Yep, I'm out of warranty. That's part of my concern. What could possibly go wrong I asked myself!

I'll check with dealers.

Could try the connected reset, I posted it up in another thread a few days ago.

Do you have your phone connected via Android Auto (or possibly CarPlay), by any chance? I started hearing the same thing after I enabled Google Maps - I think it's the phone playing the announcement through the car connection. The other clue for me was that the voice is a lot harsher than the BMW voice; ended up disconnecting Android Auto entirely as I don't really use it and I certainly don't need to yelled at every time a GPS satellite disappears behind a cloud!

I’ve had it twice where the sat nav completely lost it’s location. Hasn’t happened since though.

From my understanding, Apple CarPlay uses car gps anyway?

I think we have a solution - yes I recently paired a new Google Pixel phone with the car.

It was a tricky procedure, nothing like the last time I paired a phone. I had to enlist the BMW dealer to help - he had a lot of difficulty getting it to work but eventually did it using Android Auto. Yes, the voice is different from the usual BMW messages.

Thanks!

Are you sure about this?

I'd assume CarPlay would use the car gps chip to obtain the position, as the phone wouldn't have a reliable signal in the center cubby. Just keeping the phone in your pocket obstructs the gps signal enough to make it useless so I really hope that's not the case.

To my knowledge, OEM CarPlay installations usually use the car onboard GPS, while the third-party aftermarket ones (usually made for older cars), use the phone gps.

The same started to happen to me after the car had passed the 3 year mark. I hadn't renewed the Connected package and was using Android Auto as I'd lost the RTTI feature.

I disabled Android Auto and purchased the Connected package and the warning seems to have disappeared, but I believe it's the former that was the source of the warning.

It uses the data connection from the phone to get accuracy. It needs both
