E89 specific roof problem with cycle not completing

Post by Razor72 » Wed Aug 17, 2022 10:22 am

Hope there maybe someone who can help with what seems quite a specific problem that has proven to be very intermittent ... until now!

I thought the problem had disappeared but sadly not. The roof cycle is simply not completing either up or down, hence that car is currently in my parents garage.

The issue:
When opening or closing the boot closes but does not register as being closed. The motor can be heard whirring away over my right shoulder trying to secure the boot and hinge to open normally. However, as many will therefore know, with this not completing, the windows therefore do not rise to complete the 'open' cycle, whilst when closing the rear screen remains on the roof as it is registered as not closing the boot properly.

Having spoken to a helpful guy in Lincoln (z4 Refreshed) who sadly does not deal with the E89 version, he suggested the hall? sensors (clearly i'm not very technical when it comes to cars!). I have had a post before with the suggestion of replacing 2 sensors and getting these from Sopers at Lincoln but as I say it seemed to have solved itself. Having already taken it to one local 'BMW specialist' who replaced the boot shelf, and another suggesting the battery (which is not the issue either), can someone recommend a reliable, honest and fair priced garage or individual who would be able to pinpoint the issue and help resolving it?

I live just north of Peterborough and would be able to travel a reasonable distance as long as the weather is good and the car can be fixed on the day or kept in the dry whilst the repair is done. I can't however get the roof up and the red 'cycle not complete' pinging is constant when driving.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem. Purchased the both micro switches and going to replace Friday.
BMW Part Number 4377228585 and 4377228586

These are the micro switches that confirm the boot is closed and it's ready for the back window section to drop into place.

Did either of the two “specialists” put a code reader on the car? If not, do you have access one to see if it throwing any codes at this point?

It was originally put on diagnostics at BMW but showed no issue except low battery - which has now been changed. The second 'specialist' also detected no fault code, but replaced the cover in the boot. Speaking to Z4 guy today he said sensors probably straight away - whilst im a complete novice, it seemed logical that it was something like this that was not registering the boot as being closed.

Please let mwe know how this goes and how easy they are to fit. Would be interested to see if it resolves the issue

If you can use a socket set and have decent eyesight, they are really easy to change. There are 'step by step' instructions on the forum if you search. There is only one thing that is really important; that is the position of the bootlid brackets when re-assembling, or it can go out of alignment then a world of pain ensues. Again instructions on the relevant thread. I managed to do mine in about an hour and I hadn't touched a car in 25 years.

There aren't many things you can fix on a BMW for £36; the rear microswitches are luckily one (or two) of them.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Finished the repair. Easier than expected. Didn't remove any of the boot liner. Just popped several pop pins for the side liner. Then pulled liner back enough to get my hands in. Best to use a 1/4" drive socket with a short extension. I recall using both a standard 13mm socket and a deep 13mm socket.

Yes reading about it looked so complicated, when in fact it was one of the easiest jobs I've done. One thing though... If you have a soldering iron, I would try heating the sensor screws. It just might loosen the Loctite.
