Overheating

Post by JamesClements » Mon Aug 08, 2022 3:00 pm

Seems the water pump may have given up on the E86 - out for a blast yesterday and the temperature suddenly shot up and the warning light came on. Could anything else be causing this? Thermostat maybe?

You had a code reader on it yet? The pump threw up these errors on mine

Edit: fan was also running on cold start up

Cheers Andy got it booked into my Indy tomorrow for a look - fan is running on startup as well. There is fairly fresh coolant in it seems likely it is the pump

What you describe is exactly what happened when the pump on my first E86 died. :(

If it is the pump just make sure your Indy doesn't buy a replacement from BMW as they charge over £500 for them. :o

You can find the same Pierburg pump in other places much cheaper.
    Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
    Gone - Montego Blue
    Gone - Ruby Black

Thanks Mr Tidy - just spoke to the garage they are quoting £614.29 for the pump I have found a Pierburg pump on AUTODOC for £281.55 although I’m always a little nervous about fitment. Is the Pierburg the one originally fitted by BMW?

James the BMW one is the Pierburg with a BMW stamp on it. Exactly the same item. I got mine from Germany but not AUTODOC, you’d need to check with your Indy if they’ll fit customer supplied parts, mine will. I was £420 ish all in including new stat too

Just for transparency James, my £420 included labour for fitting and coolant  but I didn’t need the car quickly so was happy to wait for delivery from Germany

Thank you - Iv been quoted £200.00 for the labour (3 hrs) and coolant which seems roughly the going rate

My Indy charged me £541.20 in 2018 to supply and fit a new pump and fresh coolant on my E91 that used the same part if that helps.

It’s an easy job on the n52 engine, the 3hours they’re quoting is ott in my opinion-i helped my nephew change mine & it was done in an hour.

Thanks Rob - he's agreed to include a new thermostat and coolant FOC at the same time so about £450.00 total which I'm ok with
