Aldermore are offering 2% locked in. I just put 10k in for 3 years to go towards retirement. Probably spend the lot on fags & lager though

With interest rates going up, isn’t that a bit long at a 2% rate? I was hoping that the rates would be around 5 by then if the current inflation rate is anything to go by

Definitely Ronk. They took a big hit around the time Russia invaded Ukraine and I think this coupled with the over valuation of some big American tech companies are partly the cause. Some unit trusts that I’ve invested in plummeted in value by around 30-40% although noted recently that prices have been recovering over the last couple of weeks albeit still nowhere near pre invasion values. Mine are a 3-5 year investment so not too concerned.

I knew an old chap who cashed in at one of the the previous dives - he lost a lot of money.

I knew an old boy I worked with in the 1980’s who believed that when a market took a dive you invested more on the basis that markets always recover. This was specific to unit trusts and worked well for me in 1987 and fingers crossed it works for me this year!

That’s what the financial bods say - I suppose it’s much easier when you’re spending someone else’s money!

I had a few ISAs but cashed most of them in a few years back on the summise it's a little counter intuitive thinking it's something you don't touch in the hope you have a nest egg in later years, the chances are however your time is up before you've spent it. At what point is a good time to reap the benefits later in life?

The only ISA I have left is with the Coop, can't remember if it's instant access at 0.34% or fixed rate at 0.43% will have to check.

I've tended to invest in Antiques over the past 40 years which if bought wisely give a better return if you dabble in buying and selling.

Tim.

I'm all in on energy companies the ones that drill and mine the stuff not utility companies. So far I'm up around 500% in a year. A coal company based in South Africa and a gas company based in the Netherlands and now investing in another gas company based in Canada.

I made around 35% last month alone.

Yes. You can get 2% on a six month fixed term. The best two- and three-year fixed term savings accounts offer over 3%.
Source: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savin ... -interest/ (updates regularly, it'll only support the above at the time of posting this!).

The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee makes its announcement tomorrow (4th August) and I think that a further increase in the base rate is expected, meaning that savings rates could creep up again soon.

It would depend on what the stocks and shares ISA is invested in. Not all ISAs allow investment in individual shares, either. Not everything is down YTD, but there's a lot of red, yes.
