Would you trade in for a manual M40i...?

Gossip says the US may well get it, I see no reason why Europe couldn't have it on the facelift, but who knows.

Would you trade in for it...? Personally I'd be very tempted. Any thoughts...?

...and you're just the ideal gossip-monster to regurgitate the gossip here John!

But to answer your question, no, I wouldn't trade a Hillman Imp for a manual G29, or a G29 of any variety for that matter.

Strange that someone who has such a dislike of the G29 can't seem to keep out of any thread in the G29 subforum.
Abstinence is fine, in moderation.

The manual vs auto (be it DCT or xHP or any other) argument has been voiced many times…

Still can’t get what’s so exciting about pressing a clutch pedal and a gearshift vs just pressing a gear shift…

The paradox is the engine has been optimised for an auto box…as most later turbos are..

Unlike a NA car where peak BHP and peak torque are pushed up the top end, turbo’d cars have such fat torque curves it’s usually better to short shift and ride on a wave of torque…

I know the motoring press bang on about this and cloth tops but…

From what I can see it seems like the G29 LCI is a very luke warm over..

Hopefully they will come out with some more inspired colours…

Just IMHO…

Now if they made a G29 with the 380 BHP in Supra Yellow….
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..

I don't think a manual M40i has been discussed much here has it....? :?

Whatever floats your boat, if you don't want a manual no problem, that's not the question I was asking. I was asking if M40i owners would swap for a manual if it becomes available. Also I don't see how modern turbo cars can't run either, it's just a gearbox, the E89 does very well with either.

Not for me, although a manual Supra has a certain appeal - if I could afford one!

But then I am a serial Coupe owner.

John, I was thinking about this myself when I commented on the thread where it was mentioned about the manual possibly becoming available. I hadn’t heard that but Peter mentioned, like you it was going to be available in the US market.

I have to say as a manual gearbox fan, in fact I’d go as far as anti auto fan, I don’t think I would change mine for a manual. I know you never got to drive your M40i much before you sold it but I’ve driven mine in anger many many times and I haven’t wished for a manual yet. The box in the M40i is a great match to the engine. Driving on all different roads in all modes it covers all eventualities that I personally want. Some roads I stick it in sports plus, fully auto and it’s always where I need it to be. Certain roads use the paddles but that’s a rare choice. The only leaning towards manual is that I still go for the gearshift. Habit, nothing else and all on me. Just 40 years of driving many manual cars it’s a hard habit to break

That all said I did decide when I’m going to change mine if the manual is available I’ll take one for an extended test drive before ordering but it’d need to do something pretty special to make me change back to a manual.

Like I’ve said when we’ve discussed the lci’s before the one thing I’m hoping for is more colour options and maybe the small bonus of an uplift in power

If I was using the G29 as a weekend car or perhaps as Argyll Andy does, a manual M40i would be epic. The capped torque to 500 Nm over a wide rev range lends itself to a manual as well demonstrated in the Supra. However, as I spend a great deal of time on the motorway and in traffic a manual would soon grate

I love anything manual. If my X5M was available in manual I would have chosen that.

To be fair, majority of travel is for leisure and the foreign company visits is to me also a leisure drive so manual would do very nicely for that as well.

Yep I agree, and as most of my top down running is for fun, a manual sounds very tempting in a M40i, obvs not as sharp as a boxy but nonetheless I really liked my G29, if they do a manual and maybe a mineral grey it'd be very hard to resist.

So I am manual mad. Love them. Feel all sports cars should be a manual.
Now this is where it gets more real. My car is a daily driver. I can’t imagine going back to a manual. In fact my loan car is a manual and london traffic has already got my knee hurting.

I have to say the gearbox on the m40i is fantastic.

In short I wouldn’t change for a manual box.
