20i remap
Tomorrow I’m having my 2013 20i tuned by Celtic. I am booked in for a stage 2 but rethinking a stage 3. The car is sitting at 55k. What’s the consensus? I don’t want to jeopardise longevity of the engine / clutch etc.
Standard:
181 bhp / 199 lb/ft
Stage 2:
241 bhp / 258 lb/ft
Stage 3:
280 bhp / 290 lb/ft

To be honest....my 20i Msport is more than enough for what I need/want. I know they say you can get better mpg once it's remapped but...like you say, I'm not convinced it does the engine any good..

Is a nice claim when they say “better mpg” but in reality you remap the car because you want more power so you put your foot down resulting in no real change to your mpg apart from downwards!!

If it’s got a manual clutch then it’s best done by a tuner with a rolling road..
Otherwise you may have to play safe with a 28i level of tune..

Not sure why Celtics remap stages don’t align with other remapping companies! Celtics stage 3 is a stage 1 (software only), stage 2 is a remap with some hardware (decat, IC) and a stage 3 remap includes some serious hardware like B21’s first yellow peril had (upgrade turbos).
I’d go with the 280bhp option, not aware of anyone experiencing any negative issues.

You may think it is just a 'nice' claim, but my 20iS manual is remapped (on a rolling road) to 279bhp and is giving about 1.5mpg more than before, even when I do give it some welly. Here in Norfolk there are no motorways and precious little dual-carriageway, so my figures are gained on twisty back roads with plenty of braking for bends and changing gear.BoxClever wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 5:48 pm Is a nice claim when they say “better mpg” but in reality you remap the car because you want more power so you put your foot down resulting in no real change to your mpg apart from downwards!!

Go big or go home. The right pedal is adjustable so you don't have to use it all. You can always use less power than available, but you can't use more
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Stage 1 remap on that engine gives power levels near what you are being quoted for "stage 3," bet they charging more for "stage 3?"
Put your details into a few other sites...
Also stage 3 would also normally require other supporting mods such an intercooler, injectors, hpfp or turbo, depending on engine etc.

I'm presuming with these 'stages' of tune, the map just adjusts the boost to different maximums.
Marketing at it's best.
Unless you have it done on a RR, they could sell you 1000bhp and 1500Nm and you would be non-the-wiser.
I had mine remapped by 'superchips'. It was a generic map and done in my garage via a laptop. I couldn't care less what the figures are, or purported to be, it's much much better than it was and hasn't blown anything up.

AFAIK..none of the N20 re-maps assumes or mandates any hardware changes..
By default if it’s an off the peg tune then it can’t exploit the idiosyncrasies of each engine..
280 BHP and 450 nm is a big ask on a stock motor..
The issue on manual boxes is that the rate of climb of torque can overwhelm the clutch..it’s a common issue on VAG units..the benefit of a custom tune on a rolling road is the operator tweak the tune to avoid this issue..

Fuel flows are adjusted..exceptionally rich at the top end and ignition timing change on all tunes as well as boost…Pondrew wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 8:44 pm I'm presuming with these 'stages' of tune, the map just adjusts the boost to different maximums.

Some tunes do more on ignition advance and timing than boost..for example MHD on N54 V10 OTS makes more torque and same BHP than V9 with less boost…but that has been the subject of much much development..

That's strange - I didn't think the E89 was yours going by your post about Zedfest.

Well I can hardly keep referring to it as 'my wife's E89', can I Iain? That would be a bit strange, even for me.
I bought it, I look after it, I clean it. She is the registered keeper and drives it most often. But I will be taking it to Zedfest.
