The chap has spent many years in the USA so I’m wondering If it’s an American thing?

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Yes I've had cheques done that way, my Bank accepts them okay. As long as it is also written in words.
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

Never seen one written like that. Still pretty obvious what the amount is, which I guess is the important thing :) .

He did indeed work in the finance / accounts world
    (World Bank in the USA)

I don’t know if this cheque has been written like it has because of a lapse or it’s an attempt to show “look how clever I am” or a bit of an affectation I suspect!
The wordy bit says “Fifty Pounds Only” so I should be ok.

    What’s wrong with £50 - 00p ?

All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

    F31 320i. Good car.
    E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
    Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

It can easily be changed to 99p. I was always taught to put a line through any zeros. I would have written that £50----- (with an oblique line through the 0)

I would agree but it does say £50 only ———- and the
00/100 could also be be changed to 99/100
The line thro the zero Is

I know - I didn’t know if I should invest it or buy 1/3 tank of petrol 😂

Stick it in your savings account, Ron, this time next year it will be worth £50.69 at current savings rates!

Bad advice I would say. I invested in a tank of petrol in beginning of 2020 in the Golf and that is worth a lot more now than the money in the savings account :D
