Boot release mod

Post by flybobbie » Mon Jul 04, 2022 12:00 am

Anyone needing to work on roof when open knows the frustration of not being able to open boot.
Simple mod. Take a wire from boot to the cabin area.

I threaded the wire under the plastic trim under the seat belt fixing area.
Some reasons pictures are in a odd order. Take a wire from the grey/green wire. I fitted a diode so as not to put any voltage back down the line just in case it caused problems.
Then threaded wire under trim, past the seat belt fixing and under the door rubber trim.
For now my wire is just lying free. ( my wire colour changes from blue to brown mains flex!).
So to open the boot at any time just connect to 12 volts.
Could be battery with negative touching the car body. I used the door hook on door frame. I'm using old motorcycle battery.
Or if wire long enough perhaps the positive jump connector under the bonnet in engine compartment.
I could even wire it to the remote boot switch i have but never connected on the door frame.

Boot release mod

Post by flybobbie » Tue Jul 05, 2022 7:10 pm

Well tidied it up.
Try to use the BMW boot switch i bought aftermarket.
But it's not a normal switch.
So i gutted the inside and bodged a simple push button switch behind the original button.
I then connected a positive wire from my illuminated sills.

So now with roof in any position i can open the boot to gain access to the boot and pump.

Thnx everyone..both these solutions, I think, still assume the boot lock motor is working normally?

If the motor(s) fail i can't see any mechanical way of getting the boot open.
Even the emergency pull cord only only triggers the motors to turn.

Noted thanks…I meant more the wiring that leads to the motors which sometimes suffers from failure?

Boot release mod

When i push the white triangle manually as the emergency cable would, the motors operate.
How else could i operate the motors if no electric, motors fail?

Have re-watched a video i made. Once the motors latch, if they fail, i can't see how they can be rotated manually to unlatch the boot..
I have in past fitted cable to the triangle, but it still triggers motors to wind the latches out. I then had to catch it quick otherwise would relatch.

That is correct, both motors get activated by the CTM after the cable got pulled. But that is not a required task to open the boot lid.

The cable releases both flippers, that is sufficient to open the trunk. And it's also correct, that there is no other mechanical way to open the boot lid.
Even the often reported way to pull and push the lid to the right and the left will only relesse the locking system on the right. Never ever on the left, as this one has a constructive difference.

Just drilling a hole to get access to the cable would help, but that is absolutely not a reccommendation for non experienced owners. A very expensive part can be destroyed by this.

The step to activate the 2 motors is required to bring the 3 switches on both sides (2 integrated in each motor, 1 externally with the "breaking wires") into the initial position to be able to start the looking process later on.
