Recently acquired a 35is through the forum.

Anyone had any recent experience of the BMW insured warranty - worth it?

Part of me says yes and the other part says just save the money as they will try to wriggle out of the work on a technicality. Mate had an M3CS and not a great experience as wouldn’t pay (long story). One persons view I know.

Welcome any feedback.

Cheers

I’ve recently acquired a 3.5i and have taken the bmw extended warranty out. More for peace of mind for me as a lot can go wrong with these cars. I was quite happy with the price too compared with Warranty wise or Warranty direct. It’s always a gamble with any warranty wether or not they will pay the claim or not but one things for sure I’d rather have one for what it cost like I say just for peace of mind. Is your car the red one that was for sale a few weeks ago?

I had a 3.5is for a couple of years and fortunately had no problems. But they are complex pieces of machinery and repairs are expensive. The BMW warranty was just over £500 pa. Thinking about repair costs. You don’t get a lot done for £500. So I think it’s a real gamble not to take out a warranty on cars like these. I wouldn’t hesitate.

It’s coming up £769 with £250 excess. Over a grand (ouch) with £100 excess - seems expensive.

My warranty was £457 with £250 excess and £620 with £100 excess. I went with the more expensive one. My car is 2013 with £38k o the clock. I think it is based on mileage. The other warranty companies wanted around £1000 per year with £250 excess

When I bought mine the guy renewed the warranty in my name and I’ve kept it up since.

Used it once for an active shock leak and a micro switch on the roof, no problems at all just paid the £250 excess.

It’s worth every penny if you ask me.

The guy I bought the car from didn’t extend the warranty when he had the car. I had to organize it myself. Very easy to do online with BMW but you have to wait 1 month before any claim. So basically you sign up for the warranty but it doesn’t start until the month after.

I have a couple of questions about this warranty lark:

After the first year, does the premium go down if you haven't claimed (like a NCB), or up because the mileage is higher and the car is older?

I presume at some age or mileage they will refuse to cover the car, as the risk is too high. Is this the case and if so, when?

Do you pay the full excess no matter what the claim is for? I'm thinking about roof microswitches, these ae £16 each retail and take about an hour to fit.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Mine needed new adaptive suspension last mot, which would have been very expensive to replace. Fortunatley it only cost me my 100 excess. IMHO its definitely worth it, there are a large number of expensive things that can go wrong and its piece of mind.

Any warranty is a gamble over money paid in and claims paid out, If you can afford a £2000 bill then it may be worth not having the warranty, if you can’t then the warranty will give you piece of mind, the 35 can be expensive to run with known injector, fuel pump, water pump, etc issues, although you don’t have to use main dealer for repairs so a local independent will be cheaper plus no excess to pay on a claim. if it’s a weekend low mileage toy then you may be lucky and not spend much on it, if you’re clocking up the miles then who knows.
