Was this a standard feature on all models, specifically a 2009 E89 Z4 2.5?

Yes. Opening with unlock button was standard on all E89s, not closing though (no idea why).

IIRC if the car has 'smart access', ie keyless entry and start, you can close the roof with the key aswell, or if it has an aftermarket 'smart top' fitted.

F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

100% correct, smart top is not cheap though and I think some of the features can be coded with Carly as well

My 4 series has a phone app that will open or close the roof from anywhere in the world! Always useful, that. Not. 'Technology for technology's sake  '

Access to the car by simply walking up to it and opening the door without pressing a fob button and the ability to start the car with out the fob being in the key holder plus remotely closing the roof (on the key fob) is called 'comfort access'

A generic write up is here.. https://www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/item/3 ... ort-access

You can buy a third party module called 'smart top' which you retrofit that gives you some of the 'comfort access' capablities

Later cars had fancier capablities as Pondrew stated..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is

I thought it was all ridiculous until my missus locked the 1 series with the boot open, then shut it with the keys inside.
She was 30 miles away and asked me to come over with the spare keys.
Two minutes later, sat in my living room with my phone, I unlocked it for her.

OK, now that was useful. :)
The app can also program a TV channel into my car for when I get back to it, presumably so I don't miss any of 'Homes under the hammer'. Don't think it will record the program to the hard drive, though (although it wouldn't surprise me). :D

My 20i didn't do that, not sure if it's market related? I installed Smarttop
