its got all the usual CSL traits, carbon bonnet and front seats, rear seat delete, lighter wheels and exhaust... overall 100kgs saved is a decent chunk.
however, the M4 was a heavy car, so take 100kgs off and its still a heavy car. i wouldnt pay £150k for one when i could probably add most of the lightweight bits myself for a lot less, but its the price it is because of the rarity. BMW are trying to do a 911R, but not sure its special enough to pull it off.

To me its just not special enough, wish they'd do it to something odd ball like the g29 and make a z4m CSL, now that would be special.brillomaster wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 5:07 pm its got all the usual CSL traits, carbon bonnet and front seats, rear seat delete, lighter wheels and exhaust... overall 100kgs saved is a decent chunk.

Also agree. I always though the Z4M was a bit tubby, but 1650kg is no light weight special edition car to me. A very fast expensive Taxi is what it is. The name and marketing will make it an instant classic though. Quite sad that marketing can do that really, as a sports car, it really is not particularly special. IMHO I'll take one over my daily shed though.

Absolutely this. It's comfortably more than 1700kg with a full tank of fuel and a driver onboard. I'm sorry but that was luxo-barge weight territory not so long ago.
Sadly I daresay there are enough people for whom the *ahem* styling, frankly ridiculous price tag and absolutely laughable effort at 'lightweighting' will not matter, as it's a limited edition and they'll want it for their collection. No doubt BMW will sell them all and it'll be called a success, leaving us lot who actually give a s**t about drivers cars to lament the needless recycling of yet another decent designation from the back-catalogue....
Heyho, in 15 years we'll all be driving fecking ev mobility scooters and this wont matter anyway!

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, however let’s recognise that it is actually 100 kg lighter than a competition. I’m not saying that weight isn’t important, however it is just one factor of many, this is well illustrated by how well the M5 CS has been received and that’s 200 kg heavier.

It's pretty tragic but no doubt a sign of the times that to celebrate 50 yrs of M they come up with this parody and that monstrosity XM suv thing.
For me it was a real shame they never did something M based on the i8 carbon/plastic tub chassis. I accept they wouldn't put an NA v8 in it these days as would be my preference, but even the S55 in that would have been something quite special ala M1 (i.e. mid engined straight six). Oh well

Yep sign of the times indeed Tom.
Your i8 idea would have been ace, they even had the twin turbo v12 they could have used from the last 7 series. It would have been a difficult project to sanction no doubt as it would have spoiled the i8s green image, but what a car it could have been!

Think the V12 twin turbo might be a little overkill ed I was thinking more of a closer matched bmw version of the 918 (the 'green' hypercar), so keep the electric motors if you must but put a very boosted s55 that can be torque filled. Add some wider arches etc. etc.Ed Doe wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 10:26 pm Yep sign of the times indeed Tom.

But no, let's put some lippy on the grill of the ol fat bastard and add a few bits of carbon instead. Deary me
The e46 CSL also was at least practical with 4 seats, why anyone wouldn't go GT3 or something more interesting at this money for a 2 seater I can't work out, but I am not a 25yr old youtuber so probably not the target market

Totally agree with all the above. It’s just a cut and paste of a predictable formula and the result is totally underwhelming.
Where’s the innovation? BMW as a group are pretty forward thinking and are doing lots of research into materials, so not seeing any evidence of this on what would be an ideal test bed is disappointing. At least the last M4 CS had some funky doorcard material.
As for the XM as their standalone M ‘celebration’. I think that’s says everything about the priorities and ambition of the M brand and frankly it’s an insult to its heritage. Not that they give one s**t, motorsport connections aren’t so relevant nor desirable these days and the shift towards luxury and excess will no doubt work wonders for their bottom line.

I think the M Division lost the plot when they stopped making N/A "S" engined models, but maybe that's just me!
IMO that M4 doesn't deserve the "CSL" designation, but I'm sure BMW will sell some. How long until there is a 2 tonne XM CSL?
