Dropping Insurance Prices.

Post by buzyg » Tue Apr 19, 2022 10:57 am

A pleasant surprise on the ///MR's insurance renewal this year. Dropped down from £216 last year to £130 this.
Our other cars have also dropped the MX5 even further than the MR, from £217 down to £109.

Not sure of the reason. Though I have turned 60 years young since the last renewal. Happy days. Now I just need to save my pension for a few months and I will be able to afford a tank of petrol. :D

That's a big drop Mr G. Well done. :D
As I have had a recent run-in with my insurers (LV, which I lost as they didn't give a sh*t), my new quotes from everyone seem to have gone up by quite a margin. Anybody would think there was an insurance database which insurers can put 'black marks' on! :o

I also don't understand how quotes for the same car, same details, same everything can be so different depending on the start date. I got a quote today for my new 4 series. I put in a start date of next Monday 25th; cost was £247.00. I then edited the quote with a start date of tomorrow; cost was £274.00. Cannot see a reason for this at all.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

I could not get a decent quote for the G29, not happy at all on what I'm paying. It is in a lower group than my 718 Boxster was and worth a bit less, yet I'm paying nearly double than I paid for the Porsche with no change in circumstances.
Abstinence is fine, in moderation.

Simple!

In the 2nd case you are in a rush, so they think they can charge you a premium for that urgency...assuming you won't have time to phone around lots of companies for comparisons.

If you do your comparison searches in plenty of time, you can hold that quote for a couple of weeks and then see how they compare to your renewal.

14-28 days before your start date seems to be the best.

New FCA legislation in place since 1 Jan mandates that renewal prices cannot be higher than for quotes for new customers. Previously, substantial discounts were offered for new customers.

Great news if you typically don't shop around. Not so great if you do.

They can simply get around this new legislation by telling you that underwriting criteria & risk profiles change on a daily basis, so your renewal quote from 01-Apr does not have to be the same as your own quote done on 02-Apr...or by ever-so-slightly changing their policy terms every few weeks so that there can never be the same policy in place for new and existing customers.

And if you change cars mid-term they will load the premium on the new one. This is what I have had a dispute with LV over for the past 2 weeks. I got a new policy instead of changing the LV one, as it was £90 cheaper. Guess who the cheaper one is with........yep LV! :o

Insurance companies' attitude......'if you don't like it go somewhere else, we couldn't care less'.

So you paid £69 and they gave you a possible £150 back. I can see how you took that one.
