Aux Volume adjustment e89

Post by crabbes » Sun Apr 10, 2022 10:24 am

Hi All

Has anyone had issues trying to adjust the Aux volume when connected to the cable, i have the e89 3.0 model 2010?

I have tried to connect the Alexa Auto and followed all the instructions but not getting any sound through the car stereo speakers when i select sound adjustment in the i drive it will not allow me to increase the volume, i have tried using the central dial, radio volume and the steering wheel volume but it will not move and stays at zero when selected.

Can anyone advise on this.

Thanks

Steve

crabbes,

iDrive or non-iDrive?

For non-iDrive...

And for iDrive...
Press AUX, it'll go into AUX Active screen, press your iDrive button to highlight the slider and then adjust it up

If its not adjustable then it's mot recognising a device connected or you have a fault in the circuit.
Does it work with anything else plugged in, like a phone just into the AUX socket?

OK, so there is a definite fault in the module you have connected . This will either be a MULF or Combox, do you have Bluetoothmusic streaming? If uou do then its a Combox, if notthen its most likely a MULF (although ut still could be a Combox, but with streaming not activated).
Firstly its going to be a trace the wires job. You need to start at the AUX socket and make sure the plug us plugged in for a start (it could be that simple), then you need to go to the MULF/Combox and disconnect the large multipin connector and bell out the correct wires (I'll add the wiring diagrams later as i can't do it from my phone). This will tell you if the wiring is OK, if it is then it's the module at fault. I'll assume your calls Bluetooth works as well as your USB socket (next to the AUX)?

Aux Volume adjustment e89

UPDATE

Had the Audio specialist man check all the wires from Aux output, he had radio out, centre console, armrest and part of the lining in the boot where combox is :headbang: only to be told he thinks it requires a new combox ?? And he can’t supply these, £60 for his time :(

So phoned BMW specialist in Lutterworth and explained what I thought was needed and asked for a quote but they say it may not be the combox and that the Aux connection may need coding to the radio and they would look at it for me for a cost of £78 + vat then give me a diagnosis and cost to rectify.

I’m now confused what to do, can anyone suggest that the Aux does need to be coded and how do I do this please as I don’t want to throw any more money at it just for diagnosis

I doubt very much it's not coded and needs it, but I'll happily check it out for you, and if it does indeed need coding then I'll sort that for you free of charge.
If it does require a replacement combox then I've just seen this one at a very reasonable price

Aux Volume adjustment e89

Post by simnew » Fri May 19, 2023 9:08 am

I discovered something interesting on the AUX volume control.

I had my aux volume set to max and noticed that I was getting a LOT of distortion from all speakers (6 at the moment).

I thought this was odd since if you blow a speaker, it’s normal for it to be one not all six!

Then with a bit of problem elimination, I realised that if I reduced the aux volume to the midway point (default) that the distortion was gone completely.

Turning the volume up on the main amp volume control worked fine and I could get to high volume without significant distortion. So clearly the aux volume is acting as a pre-amp to the main amp in my system (pro nav CIC system) and set too high can make the 6 speaker setup sound even worse. Maybe there is an error in the preamp circuit in my car but I thought I would let people know my experience.
