The parts bin thing is highly frustrating - not knowing what it will and won't come with. Especially when a big part of buying these cars is that they are (to me anyway) a sports/daily crossover with the tech that you'd want in a daily. If the key tech is missing, I'd rather not have the car. I said from the start, if the car comes without HK, I'm not taking it.

I was going to buy an Alpine A110 and yet the sensible part of me was saying that the rubbish infotainment system on it and the lack of creature comforts (and storage) would do my nut in as a daily driver. I'm not too sure now. There's a handful of new Alpines in the country ready to go right now. Thats the thing - they are a great car - but for most, can only be a weekend car.

But then I remember, I'm not really in a rush for the car (although I would like it for the start of the nice weather season) - but the crap shoot on what you are going to get and when is not the greatest buying experience.

But then again, none of my dealings with BMW have ever been good. (Especially that time when the dealer put the wrong numberplate on it and I ended up getting arrested for boosting a M140i - but that's a story for another day).
Might be worth talking to your dealer if you are in no rush, so you get all the bits you want.

Well, lets just say the police were tailing me for a couple of miles before the blues came on. I was asked to prove the car was mine, which I couldn't do on the spot. And of course the plates didn't check out.

Plates didn't match the VIN.
Insurance naturally invalid.
Car was taken.
I was bundled into the back of the cop car.

I eventually got the docs for the car from my house that proved that the car VIN matched the VIN that was on the docs.
Then I had to get the car back and figure out with the insurance how to prove the car was insured although strictly speaking, it wasn't.

Dealer pre delivery checks? Questionable.

Nightmare.

Russ Z4, Jesus. Did the police have any sympathy for you when you proved what happened?

Any apology from BMW?

He did say my car is on its way to the Belgium Port though.

Mdecoder worked for me as soon as build was completed, didn’t work on MyBMW for me either - well not until I picked up car.

Shouldn’t be long now then - exciting times! Interesting it’s going via Belgium, as most seem to go via Cuxhaven/Bremerhaven - unless the dealer has got it wrong of course.

Dealer wrong I reckon....I have since contacted Genius and they said last stage of build process, that would explain VIN not working if build not fully complete.

Genius also confirmed deletion of Wifi functions and this includes Apple Car Play and deletion of iDrive touch controller, not sure if this the screen or controller as I have seen other questions about this on here a while back. Wifi functions will return with software update.

Hopefully it's the touchpad on top of the iDrive controller rather than the touchscreen itself.

Police were quite apologetic when they realised the situation I had been in.

I was disappointed by BMWs response - if I recall, they offered to top up my petrol tank... which I think was already over 3/4 full. My initial buying experience of the Z4 was pretty poor also, I stood in the dealership being ignored for an hour and finally walked out. It finally came to a head when I had a big rant at the horrendous experiences I've had over the years with that particular dealer and said screw it, I'm going to go Alpine or Porsche.

I feel like I really could not really recommend them - however, the sales person that I am now dealing with understood all my gripes, acknowledged that my experiences had been unacceptable sh1te - and to give her her due, I've been very happy with my experiences with her. She's said she's going to do her best to try and make good of my bad experiences.

It's pretty terrible that I dread having to go into the dealership, whether it be for sales or service. (Service... wow, now there's some pants experiences)

you'll need the touchscreen in it. i couldn't accept it. CarPlay and BMW's system need the ability to touch the screen. its a better user experience. imagine an iPad with only a mouse and thats how it will feel.

This is exactly what I was thinking. On a car this expensive why on earth would you accept the lack of a touch screen? FFs, our Hyundai Tucson has a touch screen!!

My wife has a Seat Ibiza and that has lights that look round corners which is a £900 extra on a Z4
