OBD 11 gives an easier install than hardwire and cleaner than cig light socket.

ori, any particular reason for that one? Also what’s the advantage of the OBD install and does that have the battery protector built in?
Looking at it, might spend a bit more and get the q800 which has higher res.

Not sure about benefits of obd or other install, but a constant live feed is needed for parking mode. Obd tells it the car is off otherwise it waits for you to be stationary for five mins I think.

I’m looking at various companies. So far £299 installed is the best price I got. Prices vary wildly.

Peter, do you think that existing mount could be adapted/made to fit in/on the roll hoop since it’s so small?
Hi, I’m not sure hence my questions..the mini garmin is very compact..I hate those big things hanging down with a distracting screen…

I can’t work out whether the forward facing camera mount can simple swivel backwards..

Awaiting Ray comments …but given that the two cameras could be networked looks a cute idea..

The issue with a rear facing camera mounted on the hoop is that most are not water resistant so it’s an issue for us hard core top down motoring chaps.. :driving: :driving:
I know the rear facing element of this covers rear passengers etc but I’m wondering if due to the small cabin size in the Z4 if the rear facing one would “catch” the images through the rear window when the top is up or is clear enough for the same when the roof is down.

https://www.halfords.com/technology/das ... 66398.html

Yes the waterproofness may be an issue for us up here. Suppose we’d just need to maintain enough speed to ensure the water blows over the car
Suck it and see?

I don't think there's a perfect solution...from the rear I'm more interested in capturing the rear enders that then push you into someone in front..hopefuly there would be enough resolution plus sound effects to determine such events?
I had a rear-facing dashcam in my S2000. I fixed it to the glass wind deflector between the head restraints. It worked very well but looked a little ugly!

I think I’ll go for the Garmin mini initially then either add a second mini or one of the other Garmin units depending on how the mounts work out..

I appreciate that compared to a headrest mounted or bumper mounted solution it will be inferior but probably better than nothing…

I’ll order the mini now and see what gives..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..

If you installed two individual units of these do you know if you’d be able to wire them both through the one voltage monitor/regulator unit that cuts the power to save the battery from going too low?

Hi BMWZ4MC, This is the camera mount supplied with the mini 2, two supplied along with cables and 12v adapter plug. On the Garmin drive app there is an option for “add another device” so I assume for extra camera.

Additionally i have used other dash cams in other vehicles front and rear in my X5 and SQ5 some years back with great effect, was able to trace and prove a van hitting my SQ5 in the rear while parked in the street. When I showed the company that owned the van they paid the repair bill.

Ray, thanks for the pictures. Given that the mounting is on par with a pound coin it seems completely feasible that it could be mounted inside the roll hoops of the G29. I’m 99% sure they’re open, as in no mesh, as I think the wind deflector only goes between the hoops, not like the E89 where many have mesh inserts within the hoops

The one thing that will matter is the actual size of the unit in relation to the gap inside the hoops. I’ll need to go and measure when I’ve got a minute

Mine has the mesh sections inside the hoops - as seen in https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpa ... Id=54_0590. I haven't investigated whether they come out easily; I suspect not without removing the hoop trim!

Would be interesting to see if anybody has mounted a camera there on a G29; I've been vaguely contemplating it, but since mine has the silver hoop trim a black camera might stick out like a sore thumb.

So I pushed the button on this and today ordered a Thinkware Q800 pro.
My reasons are that it looks neat. Comes with a parking mode and has built in (software controlled and adjustable) voltage protection. (Now the question is what do I set it to? 12v or 12.2?)
Hi resolution recording. 2k video recording.
          No screen.
Added bonus is that it comes with speed camera warning. ;)

Parking mode was super important to me as some of you know what happened to my last car.

Just a quick update on this.
Had a call from RAC who are doing the install for me.
All confirmed for Friday, but they did advise me that on BMW after 2021, parking mode can trigger a battery drain warning on the car if left parked for a few days. This also depends on the camera settings and voltage cut off point.
