Judder when breaking
Hi All
Had the z4 out on the motorway today
All good apart from a judder when breaking at 50 plus
Anyone any thought?
Brake pads look ok
Could it be flat spots on the discs?

Feel the wheels after a decent drive. If one is hotter then you have a binding brake calliper.
But I'd expect that to be apparent at lower speeds too.
So other things to look at include wheels properly balanced, tyre pressures correct, worn suspension bushes.

Judder when breaking
A bit of an extreme case, but last year I had serious judder which turned out to be the friction material detached from the pad backing plate on a nearly new pad.
Also if it helps, years ago my dad had a first generation 7 series and the handbook said you should do several hard stops now and again to maintain the disks and remove any glazing etc. that can occur with gentle use over a period. I guess that is less likely with a Z but it can't hurt !

Judder when breaking
I had this when I had the Z4MC and it turned out to be warrped discs - apparently a common issue on the Z4MC.
Ended up fitting 4 new discs which sorted it - but can't say as I have heard that this is an affliction affecting the E89.

Thanks all for feedback and suggestions
Balance is ok and perfect the issue only apparent when braking, i will have to get the wheels off to check. The car had new pads fitted when I bought the car.
Doesn’t feel to be pulling when braking which I would expect if front calliper seizing up

All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Judder when breaking
This happened to me when driving it down the motorway after the lockdown. Essentially, the disks and pads are probably due for a replacement.
I had mine changed and the problem went away.
Euro car parts often have 50% off campaigns on brakes.

Take it out again and recreate the problem, as you are braking release your grip on the steering wheel so you are holding it very lightly.
If the wheel is twitching left and right as you experience the judder then you have warped discs.
In regard to a binding brake you will smell that after a long fast drive, generally a sour acidic smell.
You can test the brakes for binding by driving at around 5 mph on a flat surface, put the car in neutral and allow it to roll to a complete stop. The car should roll smoothly and gently to a stop, any sort of sticking at the moment the car stops indicates a tight brake.

Judder when breaking
Ok so looking on sites how do I know the size of discs for the front
There seems to be 2 sizes for e89 3.0i s, 330 & 300
Also if I have to change the discs was thinking of upgrading but not big brake kits and not a fortune.
Any suggestions drilled, grooved etc

Judder when breaking
I have a judder on my front wheels. Initial thought was warped discs but turned out was the pads or more specifically the metal plate. The outer ears of the plate had started to rust and stick to the caliper so they were not free to move. But if a file and copper grease on the mating points and all is fine.

Give it a long run with lots of heavy braking. Then at least your hands will be warm.

Worn rear lower wishbone bushes possibly. I think that's what I the spanner man replaced on mine when it started juddering under braking. Totally cured the problem.
