Run flat rears only?

Post by Fred the Z » Sun Jan 16, 2022 5:57 pm

I need 2 rear tyres soon and want to change to non R/F. I will change front as needed. Will I have any handling problems?

Long and frequent debate but the bottom line is you shouldn’t do it…your front and rear should have a similar construction, a similar tyre compound and ideally the same type from one manufacturer.

These are relatively high performance cars, not TESCO run only shoppers.

All IMHO

Good and sensible advice - always use the same tyres for front and rear

I'm always going to opt for front and rear, don't see the point otherwise. Just my personal opinion.

it's just the cost of 4 tyres when I only need 2. I understand the safety reasons but I might have to go with 2 new run flats for now and hope all 4 wear down at the same time 🤞

Hi Fred, welcome to the forum.
Whereabouts are you and what sort of zed do you have?
Maybe a chance someone may have a pair of front wheels with non-runflats on that you could, buy, borrow, lease etc. to give you time to spread the costs of your new ones?

Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Hello and welcome Fred, unfortunately the 4 are very unlikely to wear at the same rate. RWD with a reasonable amount of power is likely to see the fronts have twice the life than rears. In fact, exactly what you’re possibly suffering from atm.

One option is the fronts go on eBay/gumtree/Facebook as there’s a healthy enough market for runflats away from the forum.

Yes there is an argument that you should not mix tyres front and rear, as in keeping the same make and model all round. There is another argument in that if you have a staggered set up your front tyres will behave differently to your rears AND your handling will be be different if you had a square set up (staggered tends towards understeer and square tends towards oversteer). Every model of zed, new and old can be had with either a square or staggered set up, thus logically I don't see much of a difference in running different brands front and rear, just buy the best tyres you can afford.

What you absolutely should not do is run different tyres on the same axle.
