Yeah definitely must do. The salmon relays eventually basically rust shut meaning the roof motor runs constantly and you can't open the boot and your battery drains until its dead. So... replace them relays!

It’s not rust that’s the problem, the large current draw burns the contacts of the relays & they can end up arc welded together.

Stuart, you don’t actually need to unscrew anything, there’s a quick release lever. If you push that the whole housing with the relays in it slides out, switch the relays over then slide back in place until it locks home

Thanks Andy. ETA for the relay delivery is 6th Jan so I'll get it done then.

The end result's the same, different means of getting there

SmartBear is being generous…actually it does matter…

With rust associated failure (if it ever happened) the circuit would fail open..ie the roof fails to operate..

However with arcing the danger is the contacts weld together making the pump run to oblivion ..

Ergo it does matter..

Interesting that you’re suddenly so concerned about facts when you got caught trying to flog an overpriced Z4 lying about its condition and not disclosing its major mechanical problems…

Hi Andy. Went out and swapped in the new ones earlier today - thanks for your tip. A wee push out of the plastic lever and then lift the housing out after pushing back the bracket wee bit to get enough room.

Can someone look at an old relay, is it a diode or resistor?
Did anybody answer this question before?
Well, there is a resistor in parallel to the coil.

The CTM sends a short current pulse to all the relays and solenoids before starting a roof operation. With these resistors, it can check the availability of these components as well as the wires to it. Same with most of the different sensors.

On the following charts, these pulses can be seen for the 3 solenoids of the hydraulic pump on chart 3...5, later on chart 1+2 for both relays.
