E86 rear wing removal.

Post by Benderloch » Wed Nov 17, 2021 5:20 pm

I have decided to attack a very small but significant rust problem at the base of the rear wing.

I've decided the only way to tackle this properly is to remove the wing. I've made a start and removed the wheel arch liner and the interior trim. I can obviously see the bolts under the rear hatch and also the bolts exposed when the door is opened and the rubber trim is removed. My question is does anyone know how to get at bolts that I assume are under the quarter light window.

Thanks All

Hi mate

Just did this last weekend

Most bolts are a breeze once you have the bumper and skirt off

Apart from the last one day up near the roof

If you look in the how to section Simon 3.2 did a good write up of how to get at it- I also did remove some of the 10mm bolts that hold the roof in place to ease the situation too

Have a look at that for guidance and shout up if you get stuck

That's ok, just hoping someone has tackled this on a coupe before and might save me some time.

There are no bolts under the window. Once you have removed the bolts and nuts in the picture below you will still need some force to detach it from the sealing compound which is used towards the upper rear which seals/attaches to the inner body. It will come off fairly easily...

E86 rear wing removal.

Hi All
Well in the end I didn't remove the panel as after the bolts were out the thing was still security attached with the adhesive they use. As it happens once the fuel flap and surround are removed you get good access to the inner base of the panel.
I had to cut out the plastic jointing section to remove it then I could remove and treat the rust. It wasn't as bad as I feared but certainly needed doing.
The other panel will need to come off, just hope it's not so well glued on. I've had some health issues so that's not been attempted yet.

This is great to know that the wing can be removed fairly 'easily'.
But I'm still slightly confused on the process that was used by Benderloch.. The part about cutting a plastic jointing section.
Can anyone elighten with some more detail.
(this is something I'l be planning to tackle at some point, so any reasearch I can do prioer will only be a great help)

Hi
Sorry, I didn’t make that very clear. The plastic joining section is the bracket used to connect the rear wing to the side skirt. Over time the plastic hardens and loses its flexibility. I had to use wire cutters to release the plastic section that slots through the holes in the wing. Obviously, you will need to replace these brackets. At the time I did this my main dealer was the cheapest.
