Engine Query....

Post by mattsaunders » Tue Nov 16, 2021 6:06 pm

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum. I bought a Z4 E85 in April. 2004, 2.5l.
I recently had an engine MIL come on (error PO171 and 174 and 313). I've found a crack in the flexi tube behind the air intake, which I think is the source of the issue.

Anyway, when poking around I noticed a tube at the back of the engine which looks cut and plugged (see photos). Does anyone know what this is?

Secondly, again (see photos) there is a connection in the centre between the two stiffening./torsion bars which I found disconnected. This runs to some kind of resevoir top right of the engine bay. Again,. what is this? What does this connection do? Just wondering why it maybe unplugged (it could be accidental but seems unlikely). Any insights / help appreciated? I've tried looking for engine diagrams but google isn't that helpful.
Thank you all.

Matt

I have same car as you and I have that short pipe with plug on my car. At a guess I think it might have something to do with emissions. If you are meaning that black rubber pipe under the torsion bar which runs back to the servo then your looks like it has collapsed under vacuum. Mine did that and you can get a replacements fairly cheaply. Mine was spotted by the MOT tester a few years ago.

Thanks. In the third photo, above where the two torsion bars meet is an electronic connection which runs to the right into what looks like some kind of resevoir.....this was unplugged....any ideas? Any ideas what that resevoir is?

The unplugged device is the bonnet sensor for the alarm-it’s common for them to become faulty & constantly trigger the alarm which is why people disconnect them instead of replacing them, the “reservoir” is full of electrickery, be careful not to spill it if you open the lid

What Smartbear means is the reservoir is a junction box. It is full, but there shouldn’t be any fluid in it.

thats great. Thanks for your help on that....that makes sense why it is unplugged. I may go and unplug (having plugged it back in) it then if its likely to be problematic. Cheers for your replies.
