Reset Brake Pad Counter

Post by ihadablackdog » Mon Nov 08, 2021 10:18 pm

So my rear pads were reporting 1300 miles till replacement. Got to drive from Devon to Darlington and back this week, and as its been said on here to change them if the sensor is dodgy (not long ago I had a red warning to replace the pads, then it went back to 1300 miles) I didn't want to find the pads were actually low.

So booked it into a local garage today for new rear pads and sensors.

Searching the part numbers on the invoice brings up Pagid....hopefully this is a good brand?

So, the brake service now says 1100 miles.

So I subscribed to Carly to reset it (bought the adapter months ago to change battery but never actually did, so hadn't subscribed yet).

It won't reset it. It read several error codes, some I know are old, so cleared them all and will re-check later in the week.

Go to reset the rear pads and it appears to be doing its thing, then just fails.

Going to call the garage tomorrow and see what they say, hopefully they have better software that can do it and perhaps they just forgot to do it today?

Whilst in there I set the roof to operate up to 30kph (not that I want to move it whilst moving, but it will reduce anxiety when opening/closing at traffic lights) and the start/stop to remember last setting, so not totally wasted :)

Found a way to do it by pressing and holding the odometer reset button, but even though it spins saying resetting, it doesn't.

Still seems a little remiss of them. But that doesn't help your predicament I know.

Reset Brake Pad Counter

I'll give them a ring in the morning. They're just round the corner from work (which is why I have started going to them instead of paying for a loan car from BMW, and to be honest, the £10 covid sanitation charge is what finished it off for me with BMW, i.e. make the customer pay for PPE etc etc so they can trade and make a profit).

Hopefully he'll say bring it back and they can do it.

I’d read that the electronic parking brake has to be off to be able to reset the mileage counter

This is correct. The e-brake has to be off to be able to reset the computer.

If the mileage warning had turned red & not orange you need to replace the sensor before it will reset.

Im in North Devon.

Yes, the electric handbrake was off each time I tried it.

The warning wasn’t orange or red yet (apart from one time it came on red, then next time it had gone back to over 1000 miles).

It said 1300 miles when I took it in and when I checked last night it was 1100.

They replaced the sensors as well (ha….I paid them to!).

Just rang them. They said they are busy today so would it be ok to take it tomorrow, so I’ll drop it off in the morning.

I would say that the menu options to do this aren't intuitive. I tried this several times and it didn't work, deciding which button to push when you get to that point and for how long was the problem. I tried a few times using different combinations and then it worked. When the numbers spun around, did you ensure you selected that item? I think you have to press reset/hold it when you see the number you want... but its been a while.

It seems like a standard problem based on the number of times this gets posted on the web (with a number of different "i've solved it" options).

Yeah, turned ignition on and when the dash display had settled down, held the button, yellow explanation symbol came up and I kept holding until the rear brake symbol showed. Handbrake off. Then held again and reset was displayed, so held the button in and then a little spinning icon appeared and eventually cleared.

Mileage still at 1100 though. Incidentally, when the rear brake icon displayed, even with quick presses, that’s all that was shown, it didn’t cycle through.

To confuse it, I read somewhere else about using the BC button on the stalk. Can’t remember the sequence, but it didn’t work either.
