Next issue will be between MOT status and insurance ...
I would take a guess at the answer and say No MOT would also make the insurance invalid - the car may be defective thus in a mechanically defective condition not Just because a tax levy has not been paid

I raise you with this hypothetical one then:

You have a warning light on (MOT failure) or a flat tyre (MOT failure). The vehicle is not road worthy at that moment, so not insured in that case ... (either when driving with a warning light on or parked with a flat tyre on your drive).

I suppose the policy stipulates “a roadworthy condition” so if they want to be awkward????

Hmm, can't find the wording in my policy regarding roadworthy at all.

Me too TBH. There has now been a lot of talk about changing policies/cover for SORNed vehicles, but no explanation of why it is ever an issue in the first place.
RFL is between me and the Government. Insurance is between me and the insurer. I get that both are a legal requirement for a car to be driven on public roads, but that is not the issue here.
I am going to do my original idea. SORN the car, leave the policy as it is, don't tell the insurers. If anything happens that I need to claim, I will re-tax the car from the first of the current month. The car will then not be SORNed on the date of the incident, so cover is in place.

I’m sure I read that somewhere in some of the blurb!

Yes:

You need to make sure your car is kept in a roadworthy condition at all times and make sure all maintenance work is carried out as soon as is needed.

Looking after your car also means driving sensibly – hand-brake turns and accelerating like Lewis Hamilton is not sensible driving and this sort of driving behaviour could see your policy cancelled.

"It was road worthy when it was nicked your Honour".

Warning lights, what warning lights?

I had a new policy starting early December with direct line for my coupe, so after reading this thread I gave them a ring about this issue and they confirmed after much research that they would have to suspend my policy while the car was sorned. I've cancelled the policy and will start looking for something new.

Thanks all for highlighting this issue.

It's their loss. Stupid really when there is so little risk and certainly less than when it's being driven on public roads during the winter..

How annoying! I have always SORNed my Z’s over the winter months, it is a saving in tax but more importantly I do not want to use my 2nd car in bad weather, my Z3 only saw rain twice in 5 years both times in Spain. Some years ago a friend of mine had his garage catch fire and his nearly new E36 M3 literally melted! So in that instance a SORN car would not be covered. I was just about to renew my insurance and will get Chris Knott to quote so it will be interesting to see if they can help as I am sure many owners take their cars off the road over winter. I have seen the figures somewhere I think it was on a forum link.

Its madness!

My policy was on the basis the car was GARAGED overnight while at the home address yet wasn't covered in that same locked and alarmed garage if it wasnt taxed.

I would add was the insurers who make this rule and not the agents. Their hands are tied.
They did try to swap me to another insurance company at an increased price.
