Ghost in the engine?
Thank you patriot66, I’m afraid that is a beyond my skill. But from your photo it definitely looks like one or more of those.
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

Patriot66 mentions a key thing for your testing: The WD40/GT85 might not get past the pulley dust covers very easily, so remove if possible.
Another way to test is to remove the belt and spin idler pulley (if present) and the tensioner pulley by hand - if they spin freely, there's not enough grease, and if they wobble the bearing is finished. A common issue for many older BMW's - the plastic pulleys are not always replaced when the belt is changed out .

Just to be sure you checked the right pipe for the split you did check the one circled below, it comes off the intake boot in to the engine from the air box, known to split?

Update. I thought I ought to tell what this was on this thread, Last week I removed a metal scoop thing from behind my right hand grill as it was rusting and looked nasty. Noise gone. Car sounds so much nicer now.
