My 7th Z4 - why didn't anyone tell me,

Post by Gwest44 » Sun Oct 24, 2021 3:52 pm

So as my Zed journey continues I find myself in another E89 - this time a face-lift 20i variant.

Now I knew you could lower the roof with the keyfob without having the smart top adapter but I didn't know you could raise the roof from outside the car by inserting the key and holding it in the lock position.

Come on make me feel better and tell me it wasn't only me that didn't know

You can do it with the E85 as well...

...but not with the E86 :P

I think you'd look a bit of a dork though, stood outside your car, holding the key in the lock, waiting for the roof to go up.
Just highlighting to the world that it doesn't work off the key fob!

TBH I’d forgot that you could do that… :tumbleweed:

I always used to do it with the engine still running to a) keep the battery charge b) let the turbo spool n cool down..

Of course now…I have comfort access so can do it on the key fob.. :fuelfire:

I did not know that but can only think of a few situations where i’d need to do that. Some. But only a few.

I can close mine with the keyfob but always opt to use the lock if I don't ordinarily do it via the cabin switch beforehand.
I don't mind if/how dorky it makes me look, my only consideration is not de-energising the battery in the fob by keeping it pressed down for any length of time.

Wait, so it is possible to close with the key fob (without SmartTop?)? I thought none of the models let you do that?

No I think they mean stick the key in the door and turn it to lock, then hold it there. Same as the E85?

If you have comfort access option, which few did then you can..my 35is has it..

Some debate about it but earlier versions had a door handle with 3 little ridges to signify that..

Also allows keyless start and opening doors with handle without pressing any buttons on the fob..

Cars with comfort access (keyless entry/ignition) allow this

No ridges on my 2009 keyless car.....
Only indication is the key fob having a replaceable non rechargeable battery

Having had a 2012MY car and now a 2011MY car I notice a number of minor changes which I guess they just kept sliding in as product line improvements
