To M badge or not?

Post by B21 » Sat Oct 23, 2021 2:59 pm

I just know this is going to kick up a s%^t storm but..

When I fitted the LCI indicators to my 20i M Sport Auto E89 I removed the SDrive dribble on the flanks and the Z4 badge off the boot.

For reasons I can't explain (apart from the fact that it seemed visually to work) I added an M logo next to the BMW logo on the flank.

I later rationalised this as the car was analogous to an M car in that it had uprated suspension, steering, brakes, diff and engine tuning.

So now here we are again..my new 35is has now got uprated Ohlins suspension, M class brakes, Quaife LSD, re-mapped and tuned N54 engine..380BHP shortly to be 420 bhp, large intercooler, M3/4 wheels..

So since people stated in other debates about the E85 Z4M versus 35is that the reason a 35is couldn't be classed as M was because the brakes, diff, engine, suspension, steering were all stock as per 35i then it didn't qualify. :tumbleweed:

So what do people think?

Why not put an "L" badge on it?

Almost an "M" :P

Instead of an M badge, I thought this was a really cool thing to do.

Less is more I reckon.
Only reason the badges are still on mine is lack of commitment and worry about leaving marks.

When you disappear into the distance it won't matter whether the badge says 'M' or '1.3GL'. You've still left them behind.

Bear in mind though that every other week, as you bolt something else on, you'll need to change the numbers. :poke:

On the 24hr racers they have those little lights in the windows that tell you which position they're in.
You need some of those:
"Today the car that passed you had 390bhp. Please check back next week for more updates........."

Add some 2.0 TDI badges. That way super cars will get the joke when you pass them.

BMW themselves stuck one on a couple of years later so I can't see how anyone could have a problem with it.

I love the "282" above though, great idea, very subtle. You've created the car yourself, so why not give it a unique designation to go with the unique modifications?

Based on the fact that it will be producing more power than a Z4m an M+ badge would be more fitting :poke: :fuelfire:

One of my many careers was designing and fitting car graphics back in the late 80s. One of the other guys in the company had a client who wanted 'the b*ll*cks' in big pink letters down the side of his capri... how about something like that? Oh he got pulled rather quickly and told to remove them.

M badges would cheapen it. It's always the slow cars that have extra badges added, like a way of compensating for a lack of power.
