The issue is I can't find it!
According to realoem there are two lilac roof relays behind the glove box.
The only other possible option I can see is the blue DME relay in the engine bay, but I'm loath to mess with that on a whim.

Yes Stuart, I know the roof relays are there, and Barry can get me those to swap out.
It's the actual existence of the mythical Terminal 30 relay I'm doubting a little now?
No sign of it on realoem that I can find?
(Bearing in mind I'm engines and airframes, not electrickery)
Ahem, it may not exist  my bad.

Arrived this morning thanks.
Postie was most amused to see just my legs sticking out of the boot as I swore at the roof motor. :D

A different roof problem

Post by enuff_zed » Sun Oct 24, 2021 12:20 pm

Here I am in need of advice again. Thought I'd keep it all together on this one thread.
This morning I finally completed moving what had been a fully working roof motor into the boot.
Went to test it and won't move.
Front unlocks, motor runs, but no movement at all. Red light flashes.
Microswitch definitely working ok.
Manual release plunger checked in case I'd disturbed it. All good and moving freely.
Only previous slight issue it had was a tendency to clunk down the last inch or two when I closed it.
So I'm wondering if the oil level was marginal and now I've slightly changed the angle it wont work?
So, all you experts, does the level look low?
If so, how to top it up, and what with please?

I am aware the photo shows the manual release lever removed. I can guarantee that's not my problem though, just when I took the pic.

OK.
Having now employed some common sense instead of shouting help, I have proved the issue.
Snipped the cable tie, stood the motor upright and it works.
So now all I need is to find the correct oil?

A different roof problem

There’s a plus marking on the side of the white oil reservoir. Normally the fluid level should be between the lower and the upper edge the marking. I placed my pump in a 45 deg tilt too and had to top up from the plug in the end of the reservoir, filled about half of the reservoir without adverse effects.

Thanks, that's what I'm needing to do too.
I discovered that this motor has been replaced at some point, and I'm assuming by taking the roof off.
The casing is dated November 06 and the car is May 04.
The pump is as new and even the insulation was new and unmarked.
The hydraulic pipes were taped securely to the very bottom of the casing using thick blue insulation tape, wrapped around about a dozen times. Was a beggar to remove as nothing would budge and I was worried about cutting the pipes while trying to cut the tape.
That's in addition to the miles of tape wound from top to bottom of the entire casing and the thick gloopy sealant between the upper and lower halves.
I suspect that what has happened is, they've fitted a new pump and rebuilt the whole thing without giving any thought to the fluid that was needed to refill the pipes. Luckily for them, just enough fluid remained to operate the roof as the pump sits nearly vertical.
Now I've moved it to an angle in the boot, the fluid is not adequately covering the ports.

It's been an interesting experience and I'm hoping the next one will turn out to be a lot easier.
Wondering why my arm was wet, then discovering it was the blood from my skinned elbow, soaking through my sleeve, was not the highlight of my weekend!

Oh and I still haven't been able to work out why sometime it won't lower with the engine running!

Browsing TIS, 54340394395 is the oem p/n for the hydraulic fluid and Vaico VA-ZHM should be equivalent.

Stuart, when you're upside down in the boot of your Z, wondering what the hell you're doing there, it's great to have someone on the end of a video call to show you what you're supposed to be feeling around for.
Cheers mate.

Yes. Your problem would have been too low a fluid level as the motor now sits at a steeper angle then in the original position. The fluid needs to cover the base of the reservoir otherwise it sucks air.

If the roof thumping down irks you, fitting the elastic straps has had a big effect on smoothing the closing action of my car's roof.

Cheers. I suspect it was a symptom of barely enough oil tbh.
I'll see what happens when I get it refilled.
