Audio Sounds Like Crap!

Post by stal023 » Sat Oct 16, 2021 2:53 am

All of a sudden my entire audio system went from sounding amazing to complete crap. I checked to make sure everything was securely hooked to the amp, all good..I have the GROM hooked up and I believe I have the premium package. Advice to troubleshoot? All speakers sound like they are blown. Thanks!

Anyway to test that?

There are 4 connections near the amp that aren't connected and I have no clue what they are.

I checked fuse 50, that was good. Any other fuses to check?

I don't have the standard Bmw amp in mine so not sure on those connectors but they don't look like audio ones ? ... speaking from my stage audio work ...either the head unit is giving out bad signal or amp is corrupting the output ... very unlikely that all speakers are blown .... hopefully someone else on here will have more info on the system you have :)

I asked original owner on those connectors and he said they were the 6 disc CD changer that I believe was removed.

I doubt all speakers would go out at the exact same time.

What amp do you?

Didn't realize the actual amp has a fuse, which seems a bit odd since there is a location in the fuse box for this. Guess I will take the amp out to confirm this afternoon.

Good luck ! ... I just have a active under seat sub to help the standard 6 speaker system out on lower frequencies, plus I fitted to Harmon kardon mids in the door beind the standard grills as there was no speakers there

Indeed it does have a fuse on it, just exactly the same as this photo but I've not seen a fuse like this one, it isn't see through to be able to easily inspect if it is blown. Trick to one that isn't see through? Appears the top can be removed to access the metal "pins" to be able to put a auto light to test it that way??

I'm in the states. Anything I have read for this system, it says the only way to do aftermarket amp is gut the entire system. Which honestly is going to be cheaper than $1400-1500 but sounds like a PIA to accomplish.

I want to make sure before I do any troubleshooting, I should take the negative wire off the battery terminal before disconnecting anything to avoid the dreaded airbag light, correct?

Okay I tested the fuse on the amp. It's good. I then took the head unit out and tested that fuse. It was good. All connections were secure. I then light tested every single fuse in the fuse box and got one that didn't work, #32 which says it's for the SMOG manual gearbox (which I don't have, mine is a manual).

I then put on music with heavier bass and got next to each speaker. The subs in the back actually sound okay and so do the speakers that are in the front near the floor. The rest sound so horribly bad.

A new amp is $1500. Is there a way to test the amp and/or speakers to figure out which route to go?? Really appreciate the help everyone.
