Hooking up a CTEK charger

Post by KrusteKlubba » Mon Sep 27, 2021 3:25 pm

Hi

I would like to keep the car on charge when not in use. I have a suitable CTEK charger and can see the '+' and '-' connections in the engine compartment. I've heard that direct connection to the battery would cause damage.

Can anyone suggest a good way of routing the mains cable into the engine bay? From underneath, under the bonnet (I need keep the bonnet closed).

Is there a better grounding location than the official ground terminal? It looks unlikely to fit a cable and connector in there. Certainly not the crocodile clips that come with the charger.

A photo would be great if possible please?

Thank you.

On my 718 Boxster it was possible to connect the CTEK to the cig. power socket and maintain the battery that way, I suspect my G29 will be the same.

On the E89 the cigarette lighter socket turns off with the ignition, I’d be surprised if the G29 was different :?

I'd need to check, I know the older Boxsters had no power to the cig. lighter with ignition off, I'm assuming though it is now a feature on newer cars.

OP, which zed do you have? The older ones don’t have a battery monitoring system, IBS, and hardwiring a CTEK straight to the battery terminals would be ok.

you can still close the bonnet with most charging wires as they arent too thick.. your other option is to make up a longer fly lead and run it down to the kidney grills for permanent easy access
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

Hi

It’s a G29.

Many thanks for the replies. On my old TT the power cable fitted under the bonnet/hood ok. The G29 earth is under near the edge of the bonnet, near the washer fluid filler, but separated from the engine compartment by some bodywork (if that makes sense).
