I was at costco in Edinburgh on Wednesday and it was totally fine no queues whatsoever and no shortages at all, most stations I saw have been the same

Ditto at the Sainsbury's round the corner from me. There are a lot of shift-workers in my town; I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

So are there more diesel vehicles on the road, or are fuel hoarders mostly diesel drivers?

I guess diesel goes in more vehicles overall, vans, trucks and anything remotely involved in the building trade and the like and those guys tend to do a lot of mileage and therefore are probably brimming... I have stuck to my usual weekly 40 quid, don't see the need to buy more, there is probably 20 quids worth in the z4 if i get stuck

Things like this demonstrate what a knife-edge civilised society is living on (I use the word civilised in it's broadest terms).
If you want to have a fight in a petrol garage at least wear a face mask. Oh, hang on, I forget, that's so last month :x

Imagine what carnage there would be if chicken nuggets' production was affected! Or even worse, Domino's delivery drivers couldn't get fuel. It doesn't bear thinking about.

We have a wide spread of of areas of the country covered on the forum, so where are the areas with queues?

Is it as I suspect mainly down south, London area in particular or is it evenly spread all over the UK?

For starters no issues here in the Tyne & Wear area that I have seen.

To be honest I've only gone by the local commnity groups I'm active on and reading posts and comments seems most filling stations in Stafford where I'am ran dry pretty quickly. People were posting photo's showing people at local stations filling alsorts of containers as well as their tank  I've kept well away from it all.

Just siphoned a little from my neighbours car each night and I've been fine

Article on BBC website about motorist who followed a tanker then complained that the driver didn't stop to tell them he was moving mortar!

So I figured sometime around 6am might be OK - queue was just 4-5 cars deep at that time yesterday and job done in 5mins or so. Result!
Given your location I was wondering if your local Tesco might be my one! (The Meadows in Camberley).

They said they had no fuel yesterday around 2pm, but their online delivery vans were filling up.

But even if they had fuel at 6am I wouldn't be buying it - I'd rather be asleep.
