Loud 'Clack'

Post by McHaggis69 » Fri Aug 27, 2021 11:55 pm

OK -

last week I was driving slowly out my garage and heard a loud 'clack' - seemed to be from the rear roof area. Sounded like a stone hitting the car.
Happened again about 15 minutes later.

Got to destination. Brought the roof down and back up. Been ok since.

Today I put the roof up after driving into the car wash and as I was waiting in line (car stationary) - the same loud 'clack' like a stone hitting the car. My wife - whose hearing is better than mine - seemed to also suggest it was from the rear roof area.

Any clues what it might be?

Its almost like one of the catches that that tie the roof or back screen section into position isn't quite fitting into position and finding its own way a few minutes or tens of minutes later - snapping into place?

Is there a roof service regime - greasing points that kind of thing I should carry out?

Threadjack: Nice black indicators. Did you get them from the company near Los Angeles?

nope - I'm in Scotland :D

No responses to the query though.
I'm slightly concerned with the noise that appears to be coming from the roof catches. I've got the car in for an MOT later this month and will ask the guy there to have a look (they specialise in BMW and Merc).

I am presuming the roof isnt throwing up any error codes?

Have you checked the boot for anything which could obstruct the roof?

You can watch it go in from outside the car with a long press off the unlock button on the keys.

If the roof isnt latched whilst moving, you will get a red roof symbol on the dash display and a bong.

Other than that, may be worth checking your rear springs / bushings, or suspension. You may have a snapped spring.

Thanks - will do. I wouldn't be surprised with a broken coil spring given the state of the roads in Edinburgh.

No error codes on the dash.
On the odd occasion the roof does make a louder than normal 'click' as it all snaps into place on the windscreen.

I'll get them to have a look at MOT.

Got to agree with the potholes in Edinburgh. Was up their a couple of years ago at New Year and couldn't believe how mega bad it was for a major city centre.

PS Hope you sort the roof issue

Thanks all, I can't upload a video because the sound is not there all the time and there didn't appear to be any rhyme or reason when it happened.

I spent a bit of time today treating all the roof seals and I lubricated the front catches that connect to the windscreen. The roof does seem quieter now and I'll wait to see if the noise happens again. Car is in for MOT tomorrow (and see my other post today - a price for a new front bumper :headbang: ) so will get them to check any other possible sources - like coil spring.

I have a very similar issue, im pretty sure on mine its the passenger side catch at the top of the windscreen, ive noticed it happens when I drive away after closing my roof.

Thought it was a stone hitting the windscreen the first few times, but its happening when i come off my drive and hit the speedbump on my street. Not sure if the seals are just stiff and it doesnt go in all the way, cant see it being anything else so let me know what comes of yours

I'll be honest, mine's tucked away in the garage under a cover so I haven't actually looked to check if it's the same, but when wifey had a 220d convertible we had a similar experience. It turned out to be the plastic flap that lifts to accommodate the hinge. Sometimes it momentarily stuck, then snapped back into place.
