E10 mpg?

Post by Busterboo » Sat Aug 21, 2021 10:03 am

My 35iS use is quite consistent. About 1,000 miles a month. Most journeys under 25 or 100 miles. Few more. Food shopping, shooting and driving for fun.

So, mpg over 60,000 miles in 58 months has been equally consistent and predictable. However, recent use of E10 seems to have improved it. By about 4%.

is that 4% better than an equivalent mpg in august? and you are sure your usage patterns haven't changed?

unfortunately mpg has so many variables (weather conditions, condition of car/tyres, length of journeys, even mood of driver) that seeing a 4% gain by using E10 probably isnt statistically significant.

The energy density of ethanol is lower than gasoline. So if anything, I would expect slightly higher fuel consumption with E10 compared to E5.
The octane number should be the same for both E10 and E5.

Neither increase nor decrease and I have no (easy) way of measuring it. :)

Neither increase nor decrease and I have no easy way of measuring it. The average mpg, however, is displayed all the time.

I have noticed a slightly overconsumption since the switch on mine (sdrive23i), while I used to average just over 30mpg+ before the switch it is now just under for the driving conditions and no other changes. No apparent change to the performance though

I've noticed no difference at all in my Focus, which is perhaps a more reliable test because it's a 1.0 so the throttle is always 100% open...

I don't use regular fuel in my Z4 for no reason other than the premium stuff makes me feel special.

What’s the issue?

BMW say no issues with E10 although the price has increased and I don't suspect it's all to do with supply and demand.

US fuels have had at least 10% ethanol for many years…

They are lucky as you can buy 85% ethanol fuel out there

After 60k miles in my 35iS on good ole 95 RON, tried that highfalutin V-Power and had to have new injectors, coil packs & plugs. Happy to be on E10 now, running smooth as silk.

I've always used Sainsburys super unleaded. Did go Shell unleaded for a while, but costs more than Sainsburys super.
