Handbrake adjustment

Sorry to hijack your thread slightly but its on the same topic...

I just replaced the handbrake shoes and need to make this adjustment. I have read the Pelican parts procedure and wonder what the function of the cable service lock is? And if its really necessary to do that when adjusting the shoes?

It just takes the tension off cable. In the past I've always locked it - its simple so why not - as instructed.

One piece of advice, make sure youre rotating the adjuster the right direction. If you can't seem to flick it through the hole, double... triple... quadruple check you're doing it in the right direction before applying liberal force with a flathead and hammer.

Without going into anymore detail (is there any more?) I ended up needing to remove my whole assembly to unseize the adjuster

Hi again, I’ve got my handbrake cover off but the service spring/adjuster already appears to be engaged I.e. it’s already been pushed in and locked off as there is a hook showing through the hole. I’ve tried releasing it but it won’t spring back even though the hook moves freely to the side. Am I looking at right?

I found it hader to release it than engage it. I found pushing it more to the left as you push it back helped. It day take me about 10 minutes

The odd part is that the hook isn’t taking any tension, the hook moves left and right freely but the spring won’t push forward and take the hook back into the recess. It’s as if the spring tensioner has seized in the engaged position if that makes sense? Has anyone else ever encountered this?
If you look in the photo I posted, the hook has got a green bit of paint on it, this can be moved to the left easily so that it is positioned over the hole, yet the tensioner won’t spring forward.

I didn't but i managed to get the handbrake working as it had just become detached from the actuator on the actual shoes.

If the spring latch won't disengage I would hazard a guess that the shoes have been overadjusted at the wheel end, slacken them off and start again with the adjustments as per Pelican Parts instructions guide. Pay particular attention to how many turns back you have to do to achieve the required clearance, once set release the spring adjuster latch so it trakes up the slack at the handbrake lever end. Setting and releasing the latch can be done with a flat blade screwdriver but you can get a special tool on ebay that assists if you have trouble using a screwdriver.
