Michelin PS4 bulge

Post by Pondrew » Wed Jun 02, 2021 8:33 pm

I have a small bulge on the shoulder of a Michelin PS4. I can't see any good reason for it; it's a relatively new tyre (deffo no more than 18 months), has 6mm tread, not hit any pot holes. It's also on the o/s/r which seems odd. Pressure is spot on 35psi (recommended by the manufacturer of the wheel). I have had the wheel off and there is no sign of damage whatsoever. Nothing on the inside of the tyre.
Any thoughts?
In 35 years of driving I've never had a tyre bulge. I am loath to just fork out £150 for a new one until I can find out why this has happened.

Bulges are usually a sign something is wrong. Think I would be getting my wallet out. :(

I think I'd be buying a new tyre too - bulges on a tyre are never good! :o

It's really hard to get a picture of a black rubber tyre with a small bulge! :)
The car in question isn't the Z, it's a Ford. I've only had it 8 weeks and done 154 miles. The 19s it's on are as famous as 326Ms for warping and cracking, so trying to ascertain whether it's a tyre issue or wheel. The car is under a 2 year warranty from Ford. Obviously tyres are not covered, unless it's a wheel issue.

When I was young and invincible, I drove a car with a tyre bulge. It burst on the motorway 😳

I'm not disputing that it needs replacing immediately. I'm trying to find out why it happened and if Henry may be liable :D

A bulge is a weakness in the tyre structure, usually a manufacturing fault. Take it back to where you bought it, buy a new one and the tyre specialist should send the damaged tyre to Michelin for investigation (or at least send photographs). If they agree a manufacturing fault, they will refund your cost.

The tyre was on the car when I got it. I think I will call my selling Ford dealer first, as they sold me the car with the tyre on. Therefore effectively they sold me the tyre.

I had a 1/3 golf ball bulge on the rear offside tyre on the 335 (Bridgestone Run Flat)
6mm remaining tread so I wasn't happy either - I've had the car from new and it does not get driven over kerbs etc.

Just had to go for a new one.

I thought the sidewalls of Runflats were supposed to be battleship thick?

That looks exactly like mine did!
So had the tyre changed yesterday at Central Tyre (they were very good and helpful btw), and they relieved me of £157.25.
They looked at the wheel and tyre and couldn't see any reason why this has happened. They filled out a complaint form complete with pictures and are going to send this to Michelin. We shall see; I'm not holding my breath though!

Mine was offside rear too, which makes less sense if pothole damage. I rarely drive in reverse over 5mph!
I said about the RFTs to the tyre guy; he said they can bulge just as easily as normal tyres!
