Can’t open rear storage compartments

Post by MKZ4000 » Sat May 29, 2021 8:32 am

My rear storage compartments won’t open and appear as if they are locked

I didn’t think they had locks though. They were fine last time I remember using them.

I have put a hardtop on and wonder if they do have a lock and the car thinks the roof is down.

I must confess I haven’t tried the door unlock button in the car

Anyone else had this happen ?

Trying to get oriented here, do mean the you cannot operate the rear parcel shelf switches with the hardtop on? If so, then with the hardtop your roof is down and therefore the shelf has to be down :?

Are we talking about the central storage compartment between the seats? If so then yes, my centre storage compartment was locked solid when I bought the car. It has a solenoid that should lock/unlock with the central locking. Mine didn't work at all so I took the centre console apart around the compartment & removed the solenoid. So obviously it doesn't lock now but at least I can use it. The solenoid was ok as it happens so it must be simply that it's not getting any power for some reason.

Yes, that’s where I mean. The vertical storage between the seats.

Would the compartment auto lock if the roof is down even if the doors are unlocked ?

The center storage compartment lock motor is controlled by the GM 5. It could be one of the GM 5 relays.

I don't think so. It should just lock & unlock with the central locking.

I'm sure you are right. I removed the locking mechanism as I initially thought that was at faullt. It seemed a bit pointless to delve any deeper.

Have you tried pulling the emergency cord in the boot? (The little button on the back wall of the boot)

I'm not sure that will work, it didn't for me. I think the emergency cord only works to release the catch, not the lock. Happy to be corrected though :) .

It should open the compartment when pulled. That's the purpose of the cord incase the lock motor fails you can still get into the compartment.

 This is all I got when I tried, but it didn't actually break! The compartment stayed firmly locked.

Did you feel any spring tension when you pulled it?

No, just felt solid. I managed to lever it open in the end &, as said, just removed the lock.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t even know about the cord in the boot, I’ll give it a try.

I’ve just got the car back from RBM for a new window regulator and they had a quick look but suggested prising it open which I’m reluctant to do in case I break it
