Corrosion to roof panels on E89

Post by 2k35is » Thu Apr 07, 2022 12:21 pm

Registration date of vehicle: 30th Dec 2009
Vehicle external colour: Deep Sea Blue
Designation number of vehicle : 35i
Vehicle garaged since Nov 19 not known before then already existing on car when purchased in Nov 19
Name of dealer claim lodged with: Sytners Sheffield
Outcome of claim and reasons given if claim rejected: Accepted but took months to get a decision. Sytners claimed it was NOT within their authority. Took photos which they said had to be submitted to BMW
On front panel cover front o/s corner. On rear panel N/s front corner. Lots of problems with roof up/down after work had been done-eventually sorted at no cost to me.

Will see if can find photos,

Corrosion to roof panels on E89

Post by Nodzed » Tue May 24, 2022 4:52 pm

2010 23i

Had the same issue on all 4 corners of the roof, last year I contacted Cotswold BMW Cheltenham ref the 12-year paint warranty (that had just months left to run) and they said to bring it up for a check. A week later the car was booked into their body shop and the repair was carried out with no hassle & no argument. :D

Corrosion to roof panels on E89

Post by newbie22 » Sun May 29, 2022 12:16 pm

not sure i understand the problem: the panel is aluminium. it can't rust. it can degrade due to salt. also there is a rubber spacer between the front hinge and clamp.
my car is in New Zealand, 12 years old and i don't see any signs of this.

For some reasons the paint lifts / cracks in a corner and water gets in and electrolytic corrosion takes place and the paint then bubbles up..it only affected a small number of E89s...
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..

I've seen this happen a lot on aluminum Jags, always in the same areas around door edges and corners, boot lids and pillars.

“Rust” is another name for Iron Oxide, which is produced by the chemical reaction of Iron and Oxygen. The process of Oxidation is also known as corrosion and Aluminium is also susceptible to corrosion when exposed to Oxygen. So, no Aluminium can’t “rust” (because it is not Iron) but it can corrode and if its not properly sealed and protected it will react with atmospheric oxygen to produce Aluminium Oxide. That’s why there are a lot of cases of this happening to z4 owners. If your car hasn't suffered then you're one of the lucky ones I guess but it doesn't mean it can’t happen.

Not heard from Sytner so visited again today and asked to see the warranty / claims manager. He’s taken photos and paint depth measurements, confirmed that the paint is original and will discuss with the bodyshop manager. Should hear something in the next couple of weeks. :zzzz:

Corrosion to roof panels on E89

Corrosion might start due to some factory contamination.
Seeing as corners are the last place any cleaning fluids might run off or where the placed on a flat surface, corners touching.
Perhaps they were sprayed too soon after prepping and paint reacted to cleaning fluid.

Reason why paint stripper not used on aircraft. I gets under the joins in the aluminium skin then later seeps out reacts with new paint.
Soda stripping way to go there.

My car has it in one corner of top panel, but has never got ant worse since i had car 10 years age.

What does annoy me is corrosion of the stiffening strip in the door window rubber.
That is bubbling under the rubber.
Expect that on a Leyland car, not BMW.
What would have been the cost of it being stainless, pennies.
